Brownfield Lifts Cougars Past Sun Devils
Nov. 1, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. --- Washington State junior Shelby Brownfield knocked in her third goal of the season 31 minutes into Friday's match with Arizona State, giving the Cougars all they would need in a 1-0 conference victory over the Sun Devils.
Brownfield, who didn't play in a match this season until Oct. 11 due to a knee injury, took a pass from freshman Alix Rustrum and drilled a shot past ASU goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald for the game-winner.
'Shelby told me after the game, 'Coach, I didn't play very well today,'' WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias said. 'But she scored a goal today and that's what we need our attacking players to do. Sometimes opportunistic, good strikers, even when they are not playing well, are still finishing. That's a good sign and she has made a great contribution.'
Defense was the Cougars calling card in the evening match, as WSU's defensive unit of Mariette Boyce, Shay Hobby, and freshman Jennie Kunc held the athletic Sun Devil squad to just eight shots. Junior goalkeeper Sara Leibowitz was called upon to make three saves in her sixth shutout of the season.
'It was a very good game and I thought we played well,' Tobias said. 'We made saves when we needed to. Shay and Mariette kept us organized and we made some timely tackles. They had to deal with a lot of fast players and did a good job dealing with that today.'
Washington State improved to 9-5-2 on the season, including 3-1-2 in Pac-10 play. The Sun Devils fell to 10-4-2 and 3-3-0 in conference.
'We are excited about this win. It is a good step toward the postseason,' Tobias said.
The Cougars travel to Tucson Sunday for a match against Arizona at noon.
