Nov. 1, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz. --The Washington volleyball dominated its way to a 3-0 sweep over No. 14 Arizona this evening at the McKale Center ( 30-25, 30-17, 30-18). The victory improves the Huskies' record to 6-6 in the Pac-10 and 14-7 overall and snaps a ten match losing streak to the Wildcats. Arizona's record dips to 6-5 in conference and 11-8 overall.
As a team, Washington could do little wrong. The Huskies hit .395 for the match, collecting 57 kills on 114 swings with just 12 errors. In the first and third games, Washington hit .541 and .484, respectively. The Wildcats could muster just a .162 attack percentage and were out-blocked 11.5 to 8 at the net for the match.
Sophomore Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) recorded a match-high 17 kills and also came up with 12 digs. Senior Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) finished with 16 kills on .324 hitting and had 10 digs. Sophomore Kaitlin Leck (Carson City, Nev.) hit a match-high .643 with nine kills for the Huskies.
Arizona senior Lisa Rutlegde and freshman Bre Ladd were the only two factors for the Wildcats, both scoring double-digit kills for Arizona with 12 and 11, respectively.
'We played our most composed game of the season,' said head coach Jim McLaughlin. 'We got on their tendencies early and showed a lot of maturity. Arizona is an excellent team so this is a great win for us.'
Washington returns to the floor on Saturday for a battle with No. 19 Arizona State. The Sun Devils squeaked out a five-game win in Seattle earlier this season. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
