Oregon State Rows Strong In First Contest Of The Fall
The Oregon State women's crew opened its season with a strong performance against the University of Washington in the Championship Eight race at the Portland Loop this Saturday.
The Beavers rowed strong on the 4 mile course and barely missed overtaking UW, finishing with a time of 23:02.90. The Huskies, who beat the Beavers by almost a minute in the 2001 match-up at the Loop, finished in 22:54.60.
'I am very pleased with our performance,' head coach Charlie Owen said. 'We should be happy because we rowed a complete race from start to finish. We accomplished our main goal, which was to close the margin with Washington's first and second varsity.'
In the Collegiate Eight competition the Beavers' second and third varsity boats finished with times of 23:47.21 and 25:33.18, respectively, and placed second and third as well. The OSU freshman/novice eight rowed to a fifth-place finish with their time of 27:34.01, and the OSU alumni eight was sixth with a time of 27:59.80.
'Our third and freshmen boats competed very well and had a good first race of the year.' Owen said.
In the Collegiate Four Oregon State's alumni boat rowed its way into first-place with their time of 27:41.00.
'We are looking forward to going up against a lot more crews and competition next week.' Owen said.
The Beavers will take to the water next at the Head of the Lake Regatta in Seattle, Wash. Nov. 10.
