Nov. 2, 2002
Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State University men's basketball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Jay John, scrimmaged for the final time Saturday before the first game of the season.
The Black team posted a 45-41 victory over the White in the first of two 20-minute halves. The Black team roster included Floyd North III, Lamar Hurd, Sal Vance, Michael Johnson, Philip Ricci, Jimmie Haywood, and Jarman Sample. The White team included Brian Jackson, Vic Remmers, Mike Cokley, Chris Stephens, J.S. Nash, Derek Potter, and Kevin Field. David Lucas did not play in the scrimmage due to an ankle injury.
Ricci led the Black squad in the first half with 13 points, while Haywood added 10, and Sample six. Nash paced the White with 14 points, with Jackson adding 12.
John shook up the roster for the second half, a game the Black won 61-37. The Black roster included Hurd, Jackson, Remmers, Vance, Cokley, Nash, and Ricci. Cokley hit four three-point field goals in the half and registered a total of 17 points. Ricci added 14 points, and Jackson 13. The White was paced by Stephens' 12 points.
'I can see the improvement in this team everyday,' John said. 'We are better at the end of this week, than we were at the end of last week. The return of Jackson and Potter (both were sidelined with injuries until Monday) has really changed the dynamics of practices and scrimmages. We were far more intense this week; Brian and Derek bring a lot of intensity to the court.'
Oregon State hosts the Northwest All-Stars at 7:05 p.m. this Monday in Gill Coliseum in the first of two exhibition contests.
'The entire team, including the coaching staff, is ready to play a game,' John said of Monday's contest. 'The whole game-day approach to things, the mental aspects, and the routine of playing a game is something we need to experience. Monday will be a good trial run.'
