UA Cross Country Continues to Struggle at Pac-10 Championships

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's cross country teams continued to struggle with youth and inexperience at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships, hosted by UCLA at the Brookside Golf Course. The men's team finished seventh with a team score of 176 points. The women's team finished ninth in a nine-team field with 242 points. Stanford swept the men's and women's titles for the second year in a row.
The Arizona men were led by junior Mark Anderson for the fifth consecutive meet. Anderson finished 14th on the 8,000-meter course, clocking a time of 24:21. Junior Wade Juntunen was the next Wildcat finisher in 38th place. He finished with a time of 25:13. Close behind Juntunen was junior Kevin Engelhardt in 39th place and a time of 25:14. Senior Eric Bohn was the fourth Wildcat finisher in 49th place with a time of 25:30. The final scorer for the Arizona men was redshirt freshman Josh Ludwig. Ludwig placed 57th in 26:09. Redshirt freshman Aaron Powell finished 64th in 26:42, and junior Craig Pansing was 66th in 26:53 to round out the men's runners.
Freshman Adrienne Goeller led the UA women for the third consecutive meet with a 50th-place finish. She finished the 6,000-meter course in 22:44. Redshirt freshman Robin Tierney was the second Wildcat to cross the line, finishing 56th in 23:06. Freshman Jenny Sears was close behind in 57th, clocking a time of 23:12. Freshman Jen Ford led a pack of Wildcats, placing 65th in 23:31. Redshirt freshman Michi Hirakawa-Wong finished 66th with a time of 23:43, while redshirt freshman Susan Mortensen placed 67th in 23:58. Freshman Lilli Shoen saw her first action of the year, finishing 76th in 25:08 to round out the women's action.
The Wildcats have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Western Region Championships in Palo Alto, Calif. on Saturday, November 16. This meet will determine who qualifies to compete at the NCAA Championships later in the month.
