WSU Men Finish Fifth; Women Sixth at Pac-10 Cross Country Championships
Nov. 2, 2002
Pasadena, Calif. -- The Washington State cross country teams came out strong at the Pac-10 Championships Saturday, at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, California. The Cougar men, led by Danny Wolf's 23rd place finish were fifth in team scoring and the WSU women, with Anna Blue's 20th place finish, were sixth.
The WSU men's team scored 165 points, just ahead of California's 166 points for sixth. Stanford's men's and women's teams repeated as the conference team champions.
Wolf, a sophomore from Reno, Nev., ran a time of 24 minute and 45 seconds for 23rd. Wolf was followed by Ian Johnson in 29th and Mark Wicklander in 37th. Other Cougars placing were Kyle Barker 44th, Mike Heidt 48th, Reid Carrell 59th, and Justin Ireland 68th.
'The men ran a really good race today,' said WSU Head Cross Country Coach Jason Drake. 'Danny Wolf finished better then he did a year ago and Mike Heidt and Kyle Barker also stepped up big and it really helped the team out today.'
Blue ran a strong 21:26 for 20th place overall. Ana Cabrera also turned in a nice performance finishing 37th. The rest of the Cougar women and their finishes were Hillary Smith 52nd, Molly Bull 53rd, Julia Corbett 68th, and Hailey Young 77th.
'Anna Blue ran a great race today,' said Drake. 'She finished 20th was only a few seconds away from being 13th so if she continues to work hard she could sneak up and pass some of those women who beat her today at the West Regionals.'
Grant Robison of Stanford won the men's 8,000m race in 23:27 while Sara Bei of Stanford won the women's 6,000m in 19:48.
The Cougar men's and women's cross country teams will have a week off before heading to the NCAA West Regional Meet, November 16, at Stanford, California.
