Fresno State Edges Men's Soccer 3-2

Nov. 3, 2002

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman defender Kevin Murray and senior midfielder Kyle Fukuchi scored goals for the Washington men's soccer team but it wasn't enough as Fresno State edged the Huskies, 3-2, in front of 1,333 fans in Fresno, Calif., Sunday afternoon.

Coupled with a 2-1 overtime upset of third-ranked UCLA Friday, the Huskies split their Pac-10 matches in California this weekend. UW falls to 5-8-3 overall and 2-5-0 against Pac-10 opponents, while the Bulldogs improved to 2-4-1 in conference play, 5-8-4 overall. UW and Fresno State split the season series 1-1, with the Huskies winning 1-0 in Seattle, Fri., Oct. 25.

The Huskies played catch-up all day, as FSU took an early 1-0 lead in just the second minute of the match. Makoto Anderson scored from five yards out off a cross from Marvin Sorto to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.

UW answered in the 31st minute on Murray's third goal of the season, assisted by freshman Mike Chabala's cross, to knot the match at one goal apiece. Fresno State went into halftime with a 2-1 lead after Kupono Low scored on a corner kick from Paul Moran at the 44:01 minute mark.

Five minutes into the second half, Washington came back to tie yet again, on Fukuchi's first goal of the season, a 10-yard shot assisted by senior forward Dayo Oyetuga. But it was FSU that came away with the deciding goal in the 72nd minute. Jeremiah LeRoy's unassisted effort proved to be the game-winner for the Bulldogs.

UW junior goalkeeper Daniel Waltman tallied four saves, while FSU keeper Jeremy Proud recorded two. The Bulldogs held the advantage on shots (14-9) and corner kicks (5-1).

Next up, Washington will play its final regular season road match at Oregon State, Sun., Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. in Corvallis. The Huskies then return home to host Cal and Stanford, Nov. 15, and Nov. 17, to wrap the 2002 regular season.
