UW Falls to No. 17 Arizona State in Women's Soccer
Nov. 3, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - Manya Makoski played a part in both goals in the final five minutes of the first half Sunday, leading 17th-ranked Arizona State to a 2-1 win over No. 20 Washington in a Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer game at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies (8-7-3) dropped to 3-3-1 in Pac-10 play with their third straight loss, including a 2-1 double-overtime setback at Arizona on Friday. Arizona State (11-4-2) improved its conference record to 4-3. The Sun Devils defeated Washington for the first time in six all-time meetings.
The teams battled for 40 scoreless minutes before Patrice Feulner converted a two-on-one breakaway opportunity at 40:19. She ran on to a cross from Makoski and shot the ball past UW goalkeeper Hope Solo. Makoski moved into the No. 2 spot among conference players with her school-record eighth assist. Washington junior Melissa Bennett leads the Pac-10 and ranks second nationally with 17 assists.
The Sun Devils scored again less than three minutes later on another breakaway. Makoski broke free and slipped a shot past the diving Solo into the lower left corner at 42:55.
That ended a busy first half for Solo who registered four of her six saves before intermission. Kelly Fitzgerald made all three of her saves in the second half for ASU which outshot Washington by a 15-10 margin.
The Huskies trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the 54th minute. Junior Dana Dibble collected the ball during a scramble in front of the Sun Devil goalmouth and fired a 10-yard blast high into the net. Despite heavy pressure on the ASU goal during the final 15 minutes, Washington was unable to score the equalizer.
The Huskies close out the regular season at home next weekend, hosting No. 4 UCLA on Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 13 USC on Sunday at noon. Washington needs at least one win to be eligible for NCAA Tournament selection.
