Nov. 3, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Ali Fennell celebrated Senior Day with a game-winning goal in the first overtime period Sunday and the No. 13 USC Trojans defeated the Oregon Ducks, 1-0, in Pac-10 Conference action at McAlister Field. Fennell, a senior forward from Santa Ana and Mater Dei High School, scored at 95:12 when a corner kick bounced off several players in front of the goal.
USC (10-5-3, 5-2) set a school record by playing its seventh overtime game of the season. The Women of Troy are 4-0-3 in overtime games this season with all four victories in conference play.
Katy Boynton registered the shutout for USC in her first career start. USC had a 12-8 margin in shots against Oregon (2-13-2, 1-6-1).
Fennell scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season and now has career highs for goals (nine), game-winning goals (five) and points (19).
'Today, we gave playing time to a lot of our players and gave some rest to some of our starters,' said USC head coach Jim Millinder. 'I thought Amy Mann and Marie Pedersen played well for us today. We know we will have to lift it up a notch as we get ready for the NCAA Tournament.'
USC will conclude the regular season next Friday (Nov. 8) at Washington State at 2 p.m. and Sunday (Nov. 10) at Washington at noon.
