Freshman LaVoie leads Ducks at the Prestige
Nov. 4, 2002
LA QUINTA, Calif. - Oregon's Gregg LaVoie shot a 2-under 70 and was tied for fifth after one round of the Prestige, played Monday at the 6,841-yard, par 72 La Quinta Mountain course. The second round was suspended due to darkness and will be completed at 7 a.m. Tuesday before the tournament's final round.
It was the best round of his young career for LaVoie, a true freshman from Pasco, Wash., who is the younger brother of former Duck all-Pac-10 golfer Ryan LaVoie, who lettered in 1997-2000. LaVoie was three strokes back of Pacific's Matt Hansen, who had a 67.
As a team, Oregon struggled in its last event of the fall and was tied for 16th with UC Santa Barbara at 304 as no golfers other than LaVoie were within four strokes of par.
Texas Christian was the first round leader at 284, followed by UC Irvine at 286, Pacific at 291 and UCLA and Washington tied at 292.
