Mike Price Pleased With WSU's Ranking By National Polls
Nov. 4, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - Mike Price, Washington State University's veteran head coach, said Monday he was very pleased with WSU's rise in the national polls announced this week, but again stressed his only focus is this week's game with the Oregon Ducks.
'We are not giving the number one sign yet, but at least now we have just one hand in the air,' Price joked. 'In the past we have had to use a lot of fingers to signal our ranking.'
WSU is currently ranked fifth nationally by three major polls, Associated Press, USA Today/ESPN, and the BCS (Bowl Championship Series poll). It is the highest WSU has ever been ranked in the three polls.
'This is a first for us and we are real proud of the ranking,' Price continued. 'I am happy for our players, coaches, and our fans everywhere. We have not discussed any of the rankings, other than to let the players know where we are in the rankings.'
'I want them to know our rankings, but we are just so focused on our next game with Oregon,' added Price. 'The kids have really bought into the season concept I have talked about and this week Oregon is the last game of this three-game season. Then we have a bye, then the Apple Cup, which is a season by itself, and then UCLA, which is the final season for us. This group of players has never beaten Oregon and they know it. They brought that to my attention.'
Game time Saturday (Nov. 9) will be 12:30 p.m., with ABC Sports on hand for a second straight regional telecast from WSU's Martin Stadium.
