Nov. 5, 2002
EUGENE, Ore. - Daria Panova, a sophomore on Oregon's women's tennis team, will compete in the singles draw of the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships beginning Thursday in Dallas. The 32-person field features the best players in the nation and should provide more experience for Panova to improve her game.
'It's great for Daria and she's proved she can play at that level,' head coach Nils Schyllander said. 'It's a great opportunity for her and she's earned it.'
Panova qualified for the tournament as a wildcard because of her impressive play so far in the fall season. The No. 44 player in the nation, Panova has a 6-3 record so far this season with three wins over ranked opponents. She advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Championships before falling to No. 34 Christina Fusano of Cal, only one round after knocking off No. 24 Chloe Carlotti of Fresno State in straight sets.
Southern Methodist University will host the tournament at the Brookhaven Country Club. The tournament will also include the top 16 doubles teams in the country. The finals of the tournament will take place Sunday afternoon. Draws for the tournament will be available Wednesday evening at www.itatennis.com.
