The Facts
The No. 2-ranked USC women's volleyball team travels to Oregon and Oregon State this week to face the Ducks (11-15, 1-11 Pac-10) on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in Eugene, and the Beavers (7-14, 2-10 Pac-10) on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in Corvallis. The Women of Troy's 19-match winning streak came to an end last week as the team fell to No. 6 Stanford, 3-2, on Saturday (Nov. 2), a night after defeating California, 3-0. With the weekend split, the Women of Troy enter this week's matches with a 19-1 overall record and 12-1 mark in the Pac-10.

The Rankings
With the loss to Stanford, USC lost the top spot in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll this week to undefeated Hawai'i. The drop to No. 2 ended a seven week period in which the Trojans held the top spot (the Women of Troy made the jump to No. 1 on Sept. 16). USC earned a No. 5 final ranking in 2001 by both USA Today and Volleyball magazine (Volleyball is no longer producing a weekly poll as of Oct. 20) and entered the 2002 season at No. 3.

Time Change
The start time for the USC-Arizona match on Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Lyon Center has been changed to 7:30 p.m.

Pac-10 Standings
Despite the loss to the Cardinal, the Women of Troy are still in the lead for the conference title. USC (12-1) sits just one match ahead of Stanford (11-2) with five conference matches remaining this season. The rest of the Pac-10 teams remain bunched from third to eighth place with only a match separating the six schools.

Outstanding Crowd Witnessed Outstanding Match-up
Nearly 2,200 fans (2,115 to be exact) witnessed an outstanding match-up against the Trojans and Cardinal on Saturday (Nov. 2) at the Lyon Center. It was the largest crowd to ever watch a USC volleyball match played at the Lyon Center thanks to an additional 500 seats that were added for the match and a standing-room only group of 300-plus.

USC Still Off To Best Start In 25 Years
Despite the loss to Stanford on Saturday (Nov. 2), with a 19-1 record USC is still off to its best start in 25 years. In 1977 the Women of Troy captured the AIAW National Championship and finished the season with a 38-0 record - the first undefeated record ever logged by a women's volleyball team in NCAA or AIAW history.

Match Recaps
vs. California
- Behind 15.5 points from April Ross, USC swept Cal 30-15, 30-13, 30-22 in front of 725 in the Lyon Center on Friday (Nov. 1). In the effort, the Women of Troy held the Bears to the lowest point total for a USC opponent this season. Without leading attacker Mia Jerkov, Cal was unable to produce much offense and hit a combined .029 for the match, while the Women of Troy tallied a .385 attack percentage. USC took advantage of the opportunity to spread the ball around and had nine different players post kills, while all 14 players logged minutes. With the exception of Cal's 4-3 lead to start game one, it was never a close match. The Women of Troy held the Bears to a -.027 attack percentage in the opener and, at one point, scored seven consecutive points on Ross' serve to build a 13-point lead before capping off the 15-point victory. In game two, USC again used a 12-0 run with Ross at the line to go ahead 28-12. Kills by Emily Adams and middle blocker Kelli Lantz sealed the 30-13 win. USC posted three errors in the game and hit .500. Game three was much of the same as the Trojans hit .356 and made only five errors.

vs. #6 Stanford - In front of a capacity crowd of 2,115 at the Lyon Center, USC endured a heartbreaker as they fell 3-2 (30-26, 16-30, 26-30, 30-28, 16-14) to sixth-ranked Stanford on Nov. 2. Earlier this season in the Bay Area, the Trojans and Cardinal put on a spectacular display, while USC emerged a 3-2 victor. Saturday's match was also nothing less than spectacular, but at the end the tables had turned. The teams matched each other point-for-point in game one. The game featured 17 tie scores until Stanford managed to break away after 24-24 with three consecutive points, giving the Cardinal enough of a cushion to earn the 30-26 victory. Following the Trojans' game one wake-up call, USC picked up the intensity in game two. After knotting the score at seven apiece, the Women of Troy used a four-point and six-point rally to roll to a 30-16 win. Stanford took the first lead in game three, but the Trojans trailed by no more than three points before eventually evening the score at 14-14. After exchanging points for a few rotations, the Cardinal gave USC two key points thanks to errors that put the Trojans in control of the game. The Women of Troy won 30-26 and took a 2-1 lead in the match. The contest seemed to be decided midway through game four when the Women of Troy took a five-point lead at 25-20. But the tone quickly changed when USC committed five attack errors, allowing Stanford to knot the score at 28-28 and eventually post the final two points for the 30-28 win. And so the two teams entered a fifth game for the second time this season. The score was tied at 2, 5, 6, 10, 12, 13 and even 14-14 when a kill by Ross prevented the Trojans' elimination. But a USC attack error and a Stanford kill sealed Stanford's 16-14 deciding-game win.

Opponents Have Difficulty Measuring Up To Adams
At 6-foot-5, sophomore middle blocker Emily Adams is hard to match on the other side of the net. She leads the team - and ranks second in the Pac-10 and third in the nation - with a .407 attack percentage. On the block, she is second on the team and fifth in the conference with a 1.20 blocks per game average. On Oct. 7 she was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for her outstanding performances against Stanford and Cal.

Mexican National Team Standout Declared Eligible
Bibiana Candelas received full clearance from the NCAA on Oct. 24. Candelas, a 6-foot-5 middle blocker from Torren, Mexico, missed the first two weeks of the season while competing with the Mexican National Team at the World Championships in Dresden, Germany. She arrived on campus on Sept. 9 and began practicing with the team, but was not allowed to compete while the NCAA reviewed her eligibility. Candelas joined the team on the trip to the Washington schools and has appeared in matches against Washington, Washington State and Cal where she posted seven kills off of 13 attacks (.462) off the bench.

Candelas is the Trojans' first international recruit since Jasmina Marinkovic was recruited in 1995 from Uzice, Serbia, by former USC head coach Lisa Love. Marinkovic went on to become a two-time All-American with the Women of Troy before graduating in May, 1999.

Burdine and Ross Provide 1-2 Punch
Junior outside hitter April Ross is never alone out on the floor. If it's not Ross getting every dig, outside attack and kill, it's sophomore outside hitter Keao Burdine. On a team that has six attackers who can get their share of kills against any opponent, Ross and Burdine are the Women of Troy's 1-2 punch. Together they account for 7.23 kills, 5.93 digs, 0.55 service aces, 1.00 blocks and 8.39 points per game. The two have tallied 579 of USC's 1,515 total points this season.

Black Unis Make Two Appearances
The Women of Troy saved something special for the Arizona Wildcats (Sept. 21) and Stanford Cardinal (Oct. 4) by donning new black uniforms. The Trojans, who have always worn cardinal uniforms on the road and white at home, have decided to sport the new unis for selected matches this season. The Women of Troy are 2-0 when in black.

USC Leads NCAA In Assists Thanks To Setting Duo
As of Oct. 3, the Trojans have led the nation in team assists with a 16.61 assist per game average (1.88 ahead of second-place UCLA). Ironically, the Women of Troy don't have a setter ranked in the Top 25 nationally or even among the Top 5 in the Pac-10. This is because USC uses two setters. Running a 6-2 offense, USC boasts the talent of both Toni Anderson and Tracy Lindquist and, while they sacrifice individual accolades, together they lead the nation's No. 1 team. Anderson and Lindquist average 8.66 and 6.46 assists per game, respectively.

Oregon State, Oregon Connections
Oregon State head coach Nancy (Hillman) Somera is a former USC player (starting four seasons, 1985-88) and former assistant coach. Somera graduate from USC in 1989 and later earned her master's degree in education in 1994. She joined the Women of Troy coaching staff in 1991 and served as assistant coach to then-head coach Lisa Love for eight seasons *** Her husband and current Beaver assistant coach, Ben Somera, was also an assistant for the USC women in the mid 1990s *** Oregon sophomore outside hitter Lauren Westendorf is a former prep teammate of USC middle blocker Kelli Lantz at Centennial High in Bakersfield, Calif.

2002 Team Captains
This year's team captain, as voted on by the players, is senior Lauren Killian. Teams must have a captain on the floor at all times, so junior April Ross will act as the floor captain when Killian is not present.

Reaching New Heights
The 2002 squad boasts the tallest lineup of hitters and blockers in recent history at USC. The Trojans' front line measures at a 6-foot-3 average height and as a team USC stands at 6-0.

USC Takes Over USA Team
Head Coach Mick Haley has ensured himself one of the best trained teams in the country. For the second-consecutive summer, USC had six players (Katie Olsovsky, April Ross, Emily Adams, Tracy Lindquist, Keao Burdine and Alicia Robinson) train with the Women's National A2 Team in Colorado Springs, Colo. - this is by far more than any other school (next on the list is Stanford and Nebraska with two apiece).

Head Coach Mick Haley
Mick Haley is in his second season as head coach of the Women of Troy. Though hired in 1999 to replace former head coach Lisa Love, Haley completed his term as head coach of the U.S.A. Women's National Team before joining the Trojans in 2001. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he led the United States to an unexpected fourth-place finish. Haley coached Texas for 17 seasons (1980-1996) and led the Longhorns to two national championships. He boasts a 816-193-1 (.809) overall record, 565-142 (.799) NCAA Division I record and a 177-13 (.932) conference mark.
