Nov. 6, 2002
THIS WEEK'S ACTION
The Cardinal women return to the courts Thursday, competing at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas. The four-day tournament is the second leg of three national championship events for college tennis. Four Cardinal netters are included in the draw, which features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field. Freshman Alice Barnes secured an automatic berth in the singles field as a result of reaching the singles final of the Northwest Regional in October. Junior Lauren Barnikow and freshman Amber Liu have been granted at-large spots among the singles entrants. Stanford's doubles team of Barnikow and Erin Burdette, also earned an automatic berth for winning the Northwest Regional at Stanford.
BARNIKOW/BURDETTE SHINES AT NORTHWEST REGIONALS
Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette captured the doubles title at the Omni Hotels ITA Northwest Regional at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The duo defeated Washington's Claire Carter and Darija Klaic in the finals 8-5 on Oct. 28. Barnikow and Burdette are 5-1 on the year. Alice Barnes had an impressive showing in her first collegiate tournament on The Farm, advancing to the finals of the Northwest Regional Championships. Barnes was defeated in three sets to Cal's Raquel Kops-Jones in the final, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-1. Barnikow advanced to the quarterfinals before being ousted by teammate Barnes 6-2, 6-4 and Burdette was beaten by Kops-Jones in the quarters 6-4, 6-1. After falling in the first round, Story Tweedie-Yates went on to win five straight matches and claim the consolation singles draw for the Cardinal.
Freshman Amber Liu advanced to the quarterfinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in her first tournament for the Cardinal. Liu downed No. 28 Julie DeRoo of Duke 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 and top-ranked Tennessee's Vilmarie Castellvi 6-2, 6-4 before her tournament run ended due to injury in the quarters. Erin Burdette and Lauren Barnikow each fell in the first round and moved on to the consolation draw, where Barnikow picked up win and then both her and Burdette were defeated in a walkover.
