Cardinal Fall In First Day Of Omni Hotels Indoor Championships

Farmers Branch, Texas - The Stanford women's tennis team had a tough opening day at the 2002 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club on Thursday. The Cardinal dropped three singles and one doubles match, all moving to the consolation rounds starting on Friday.
Freshman Alice Barnes (Cambridge, UK), who advanced to the finals of the Northwest Regional, was defeated by third-seed Agata Cioroch of Georgia, 6-0, 6-4. Freshman teammate Amber Liu (La Mesa, CA) fell in three sets to Northwestern's Marine Piriou, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 and junior Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) dropped her match 6-4, 6-1 to Kate Pinchbeck of North Carolina.
After claiming the Northwest Regional doubles championship, Stanford's duo of Barnikow and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) fell 8-4 in their first round match to Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova of Missouri. Barnikow and Burdette got back on the winning track with a 9-8(5) win over Shela Chao and Alice Pirsu of Pennsylvania in the consolation quarterfinals to advance to the semis.
Play will continue tomorrow at the Indoor Championships with Barnes, Barnikow and Liu playing in the first round of the consolation draw. Compete results can be found at www.itatennis.com.
