Hanlin, Vlaski Advance To Singles Second Round Of National Indoor Championships

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - Washington men's tennis advanced two singles players to the second round of competition at the 2002 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, Thursday. Sophomore Alex Vlaski and senior Matt Hanlin each picked up first round wins in the opening day of competition at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
Vlaski, the fifth-seed, beat Arkansas' Aleksey Bubis 7-5, 6-3 in today's first round and will face Georgia's Bo Hodge in Friday's second round. Hanlin defeated SMU's Johan Brunstrom 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4 and is slated to face No. 2 Jesse Witten of Kentucky tomorrow.
The Husky doubles team of Vlaski and senior Ari Strasberg fell in the first round to Geoff Hiscox and Stephen Mitchell of Alabama, 9-7.
The National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships are hosted by Southern Methodist University and will continue through Sunday, Nov. 10.
The tournament features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from Omni Hotels Regional Championships held across the country during October, the Omni Hotels National Small College champions, the winners of the Icy Hot/ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.
