Panova Advances to Sweet 16 at National Indoors
Nov. 7, 2002
DALLAS - Daria Panova, the No. 44-ranked player in the preseason, advanced to the second round of the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday with a straight-sets victory. Panova defeated Antonina Grib of Brenau University, 7-6(2), 6-2, to qualify for the Sweet 16 of the prestigious national tournament.
'She started out a little slow and got down 4-1 in the first set,' assistant coach Kathy Sell said. 'As soon as she felt a little more comfortable out there with the courts, her game just took over.'
Grib qualified for this event by claiming the NAIA women's singles title at last month's ITA tournament for a record third straight time. Grib raced out to the early advantage in the first set, but Panova was able to control her game in time for the victory.
Panova will face UCLA's Sara Walker, the No. 6 seed and No. 6-ranked player in the nation, in the second round Friday at 9:30 a.m. Walker advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Florida's Julia Scaringe in the first round. It will be the first meeting for the Pac-10 foes.
