No. 6 Cal Upsets No. 5 UCLA, 1-0, in Double Overtime

Nov. 8, 2002

Junior Mike Hickman fired in the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium to lead the sixth-ranked California Golden Bears to a 1-0 double overtime victory against No. 5 UCLA. The Bears improve to 12-3-2 overall (5-1-1 Pac-10) as the Bruins fall to 11-3-2 (6-2-0 Pac-10).

Barely two minutes into the second overtime period, a UCLA defender was called for a handball inside the box. Hickman fired the ball past UCLA's diving goalkeeper to collect his second goal of the year.

Earlier in the season UCLA snapped Cal's school-record nine-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory in Los Angeles.

'It was a tough victory,' said sophomore defender Kyle Navarro about today's win. 'It puts us in the driver's seat in the Pac-10. We expected it (to be tough) if not more today.'

Cal outshot UCLA, 10 to 4. Senior Bear goalkeeper Josh Saunders collected one save in the 102 minutes of play as Bruins netminder Zach Wells notched four throughout the entire game.

The Pac-10 rivalry was shown on the field today, as six yellow cards and one red card were issued.

'Anytime we play UCLA the match is going to be heated,' said Hickman. 'With Pac-10 on the line, it's going to be heated.'

The Bears return to action Sunday, November 10 hosting Fresno State at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. Sunday's match will honor Cal two graduating seniors since it is the last home game of the year.
