EUGENE, Ore. - -
The Oregon State women's soccer team finished its season with a 2-1 victory over the Oregon Ducks on a cold, rainy Friday night in the Civil War, which is presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers.
The win is the second in a row for OSU over the Ducks and gives the Beavers a 9-9-2 (2-7-0 Pacific-10) record for the year, marking the first time since the 1994-95 campaigns that OSU has finished back-to-back seasons with a .500 record or better.
Katie Henderson tallied OSU's opening score in the 29th minute when she blocked the ball into the net after a UO player attempted to clear the ball from the box.
The play was set up after the ball was played up the left edge of the UO box, where Duck keeper Sarah Peters charged but was unable to corral the ball. OSU sent a cross toward the goal, where UO defender Robi Thayer tried to clear it, but Henderson made the block and deflected it into the net.
Henderson ends her career at OSU as the fourth all-time leading scorer with 56 points.OSU's second score came courtesy of Tessa Baker, who made a midfield run after a long drop-kick from OSU keeper Jo Fletcher. Baker beat a pair of UO defenders and sent a shot in from 17 yards out for a 2-0 lead at the 42:49 mark.
'We played well in the first half under difficult conditions,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'It just didn't stop raining all night.
'Our second goal came off a long kick from the hands from Jo Fletcher, and Tessa controlled it and took on a couple of defenders and slotted it past the keeper from the top of the area.'Oregon brought the score to 2-1 in the 65th minute when Lindsey Werdell capitalized on a penalty kick after being fouled in the box.
'The second half was a battle,' Fennah said. 'The rain just got heavier and heavier and the teams struggled for footing and battled to maintain possession of the ball. They worked very hard tonight and without question, it was a good win. The kids are very excited and very upbeat.'
The match also marked the final competition for six OSU seniors; midfielder Morgan Crabtree, forward Katie Henderson, goalkeeper Jo Fletcher, and defenders Whitney Horn, Ashley Johnston, and Mandy Melendez.
