DALLAS - Daria Panova, the No. 44-ranked player in the preseason, made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with a three-set victory over UCLA's Sara Walker, the No. 6-ranked player. Panova, who qualified for the tournament as a wildcard, made the most of her entry before losing to Agata Cioroch, Georgia's No. 3-ranked player in the country, in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2.
'To have a player in the final eight at a national tournament is fantastic,' head coach Nils Schyllander said.
Panova marched her way to the quarterfinals by defeating Antonina Grib of Brenau University, the three-time NAIA champion, in straight sets. In the second round, Panova came from behind to knock off Pac-10 foe Walker in convincing fashion. After losing the first set, Panova cruised and eventually won the match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Panova was unable to keep the momentum going against Cioroch.
The rest of the women's tennis team will compete in the San Diego State Fall Classic against players from host San Diego State, Oklahoma and USC beginning Saturday. The tournament was to begin Friday, but was postponed due to inclement weather. The tournament will conclude the Ducks' fall season, with Oregon waiting until January to resume tennis action.
Three Ducks on the men's side are competing in the USTA Futures Tournament, but Friday's competition was also postponed due to inclement weather.
