Nov. 9, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Emily Adams had a match-high 16 kills on .560 hitting to lead the No. 2 Southern California volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Oregon State on Saturday night. Game scores were 30-27, 30-18, and 30-17.
The Beavers (7-16, 2-12 Pacific-10) kept it close against the Women of Troy in game one, but USC (21-1, 14-1) dominated the final two games to pick up the win.
OSU was down by as many as five points on three occasions in the first game before coming back to tie the game at 26-26. USC scored back-to-points on an Adams' kill and an error by Karah Rhoades to take a two-point lead, but Michele Solomon responded with a kill to put the Beavers within a point again. The Women of Troy put the game away after scoring on an OSU hitting error and a kill from Katie Olsovsky.
OSU hit .143 in the first game, and the Beavers limited USC to a .186 mark in that game. However, the tide turned in the next two games. OSU hit .158 in game two and -.077 in game three, for a combined .086 mark for the match . USC, on the other hand, hit .429 in game two and .531 in game three to finish the night at a .368 clip.
'We got beat by a better team tonight. We're so limited right now, that by game three a team like USC has figured out what they need to do against us,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'But, we were able to put together a pretty good string of points against a very good team.'
Rhoades led the Beavers with 11 kills, and Allison Lawrence chipped in eight. Amanda Eggert came off the bench and hit .375 with four kills in two games of action, but no other Beaver player hit above .250. USC had three players hit .500 or better.
USC's April Ross led all players defensively, finishing with a match-high 16 digs. Nikki Neuburger led OSU with 12, and Lawrence had 10.
