Men's Soccer Drops Second Straight To Oregon State 6-3

Nov. 10, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Washington held onto a 3-2 lead with 19 minutes left to play, only to have Oregon State rattle off four unanswered goals to defeat the Huskies 6-3 in Pac-10 men's soccer action in Corvallis, Ore., Sunday afternoon.

OSU's (12-6-0) win over UW (5-9-3) was its second ever in the all-time series, after the Beavers downed the Huskies for the first time (3-2) in Seattle, Oct. 20. UW drops to 2-6 against Pac-10 opponents, while Oregon State improves to 3-5.

Sophomore Brett Wiesner netted two of UW's three goals, while freshman Gavin Hobbs scored the other. OSU's Alan Gordon, the Pac-10 leader in points and goals going into this weekend, tallied a hat trick, including the eventual game-winner in the 76th minute. UW freshman goalkeeper Chris Eylander made six saves and allowed all six goals. OSU goalkeeper Peter BillMeyer pulled down five saves and allowed three goals.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on Hobb's header off a corner kick from junior Seth Marsh. Just 35 seconds later, Gordon scored the first of his three goals to knot the match at one. Gordon scored his second goal in the 25th minute to give the Beavers a 2-1 advantage.

Wiesner, the Huskies' leading scorer, scored back-to-back goals to first tie the game in the 26th minute before giving UW a 3-2 lead in the 66th minute. Wiesner's first goal was a 10-yard shot assisted by senior Aaron Heinzen, while his second was assisted by freshman Jeff Hoover.

The Beavers began their late-game scoring barrage in the 71st minute on a goal from Joe Zaher to tie 4-4. Gordon put OSU up for good with his 14th goal of the season in the 76th minute. Ryan Johnson and Matt Johnson added goals of their own in the 87th and 89th minutes, respectively, to put the game out of reach for the Huskies.

The last time Washington allowed six goals was a 6-0 loss to Southern Illinois in 1979. Since then, the highest number of goals allowed by the Huskies was seven vs. Portland in 1994 (7-1 loss).

Up next, UW will close out the regular season hosting No. 8 Cal and No. 9 Stanford, Friday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 13 at Husky Soccer Field. Friday's match will kick off at 7 p.m., while Sunday's game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
