Ducks 11th Following Windy Day at Vegas

Nov. 11, 2002

HENDERSON, Nev. - Freshman Erin Andrews shot a 6-over 78 to lead Oregon to 11th place after the first round of the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown, Monday at the 6,194-yard, par-72 Anthem Country Club.

On a day when no golfer made par, Andrews, a native of Las Vegas, used her local knowledge to survive a wind-swept course and stood tied for 21st, five strokes back of first round leader Margaret Gibby of Brigham Young, who had a 73.

'A round in the 70s was a good score today,' said Oregon coach Shannon Rouillard, as only 35 of 81 golfers finished below 80. 'Rounds were high overall, I think, certainly higher that what you see under normal conditions.'

Freshman Therese Wenslow was the only other Duck to break 80, carding a 79 to tie for 26th.

Host Nevada-Las Vegas jumped out to a three stroke advantage after the first round, shooting a 303. New Mexico was second at 306 and Pepperdine was next at 307.

Oregon tallied a 325 composite, but was just six strokes out of the top eight, where San Diego State and UC Irvine were tied at 319, and one shot behind 10th-place Texas A&M.

'We played the most difficult side in a lot of wind,' said Rouillard. 'Now that we've seen the course, we're looking to improve over the next couple of days.'

The tournament continues with the second round Tuesday morning.
