No. 1 Stanford Earns Top Seed In NCAA Tournament

Stanford, Calif. - For the first time in program history, the Stanford women's soccer team was selected as the No. 1 seed in the 2002 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship as announce today by the Division I Women's Soccer Committee. The Cardinal will be making their fifth consecutive tournament appearance and 12th time in 13 seasons.
Stanford (18-1-0), the automatic qualifier from the Pac-10 Conference, will hostCalifornia Polytechnic State University (14-6-0) in the second game of the first round on Friday night at 7 p.m. on Maloney Field. California (11-7-1) and Denver (17-1-2) will play in the first game, starting at 4:30 p.m. The winners of both matches will play Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to the third round.
'We are very excited to get the top seed,' said co-coach Stephanie Erickson. 'I believe that we deserve the seeding we received, but it does not mean that we have an easy road. Every game will be a battle. I believe that we can go all the way and our expectations are high coming off our Pac-10 Championship. We have to handle each game like we did during the regular season.'
First and second round matches will be played at campus sites this weekend starting on Friday. Third round games will be played Nov. 22, 23 or 24 on campus sites, as will quarterfinal matches on Nov. 29, 30 or Dec. 1. The 21st annual NCAA Division I Women's College Cup will be played December 6 and 8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
The ACC and the Pac-10 lead all conferences with six teams each in the tournament. Stanford leads the league with the top seed, followed by No. 7 UCLA. Arizona State, California, USC and Washington State will also be making an appearance.
Stanford defeated Denver (2-0) and Saint Mary's (3-1) in the first and second rounds last year at Maloney Field, before losing 1-0 to Texas A&M in the third round.
