Men's Basketball Inks In-State Star
Nov. 13, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Lance Den Boer (Den-Boar) of Sunnyside Christian has signed a National Letter of Intent for men's basketball, Cougar Head Coach Paul Graham announced Wednesday.
'We're excited about the addition of Lance to our basketball program and the Cougar family,' Graham said. 'He is an in-state player and we definitely want to recruit in state first. At 6-foot-6, he has good size and is a phenomenal shooter.'
A three-year letter winner at Sunnyside Christian, Den Boer has led the Knights to a 71-6 record, three Greater Columbia League championships and the 2002 State B title during his career.
Each of his three seasons, Den Boer has been selected All-State and all-league. He enters his senior season with a school record 1,991 career points, and needs just 457 more to set the Washington State record for all classifications. He averaged 30.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game last season.
'It's been a joy to coach him,' Sunnyside Christian Head Coach Dean Wagenaar said. 'He has been a tremendous asset for Sunnyside Christian basketball. A lot of people like to watch him play.'
Den Boer is the first player in Wagenaar's 14-year tenure (the past nine as head coach) at Sunnyside Christian to sign with a Division I program.
'Last summer and this summer, WSU recruited me the most,' Den Boer said. 'I like the coaching staff and I wanted to be close to home so my family can see me play.'
Last season, Den Boer set a school record with 48 points in the regional championship game against Day Star Christian of Moses Lake. His career marks of 362 free throws and 54.6 shooting percentage from three-point range are both school records. Eight times, Den Boer has scored 40 or more points in a game. His 803 points as a sophomore set a Knights' single-season record.
