Nov. 13, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Eleven different Oregon State players scored as the Beaver women's basketball team cruised to an 82-54 victory against Team Concept on Wednesday night in Gill Coliseum.
OSU's frontline of Brina Chaney, Hollye Chapman and Krystal Turner combined to score 44 points and pull down 23 rebounds in the contest. Chaney led the Oregon State effort with a career-high 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting. The 6-5 junior also grabbed seven rebounds.
The game remained close for most of the first half as Team Concept took a slim 14-11 lead with 12:22 on the clock but it was short-lived as the Beavers rallied back on an 8-2 run, topped off by a 3-pointer from Chapman.
The Beavers' zone defense kept Team Concept on its heels in the final five minutes of the half, helping OSU take a 31-20 lead into the locker room.
'We knew they (Team Concept) were a very talented team,' said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. 'I think we did a good job in our zone and really covered each other well.'
Oregon State pulled away in the second half, exchanging baskets to open the frame and then reeling off 12 straight points to extend its lead to 56-34 after a Leilani Estavan 3-pointer.
Team Concept responded with back-to-back 3-pointers by Jamie Redd to close within 56-40 with 9:46 remaining but OSU picked up the defensive pressure and forced five Team Concept turnovers over the following three minutes. Michelle Smith's steal and assist to Juleen Smith who hit a fast break lay-up extended the Beaver lead to 30 points (70-40).
Chapman just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds to go along with a team-high five assists. Turner buried 5-of-6 shots from the floor and finished with 12 points and seven boards as the Beaver posts dominated the show.
'Our posts did a great job running the floor,' said Spoelstra. 'Hollye (Chapman) and Brina (Chaney) are so used to playing together. The high-low (passing) is just going to keep getting better.'
Estavan also reached double figures in scoring with 11 points.
Jackie Winfield paced Team Concept with 18 points and Redd added a double-double with 15 points and 13 boards. Former OSU guard Syesha Thomas was held scoreless but dished out a pair of assists.
Oregon State opens the regular season on Nov. 24 against Western Oregon University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
