The No. 2-ranked USC women's volleyball team (21-1, 14-1 Pac-10) is back to its winning ways this week as it prepares to travel to No. 19 UCLA (15-10, 8-7 Pac-10) on Friday, Nov. 15, for a 7 p.m. match at Pauley Pavilion. The match-up will be the final meeting for women's volleyball in the 2002-03 Lexus Gauntlet competition. The match can be heard live on www.usctrojans.com and will be televised by Fox Sports Net on a tape-delay basis Saturday-Wednesday, Nov. 16-20 (times listed below and check local listing for additional air times). The Rankings
USC remains at No. 2 this week. With the loss to Stanford on Nov. 2, the Trojans lost the top spot in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll to then-undefeated Hawai'i. The drop to No. 2 ended a seven week-period in which the Women of Troy held the top spot (the Women of Troy made the jump to No. 1 on Sept. 16). USC earned a No. 5 final ranking in 2001 by both USA Today and Volleyball magazine (Volleyball is no longer producing a weekly poll as of Oct. 20) and entered the 2002 season at No. 3.

Time Change & TV Pick Up
The start time for the USC-Arizona match on Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Lyon Center has been changed to 7:30 p.m. Fox Sports Net has also selected this game as the Pac-10 wilcard selection and will be airing the match on a tape-delayed basis starting on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Battle For Second-Annual Lexus Gauntlet
The Trojans are looking secure all 10 women's volleyball points in the battle for the Lexus Gauntlet with a second win this season over the Bruins on Friday. The Lexus Gauntlet is a season-long competition between USC and UCLA in all sports. This unique program awards points for the winner of each Bruin-Trojan head-to-head contest throughout the year and the Lexus Gauntlet trophy will be awarded to the school with the most points at year's end. USC captured last year's inaugural trophy, but this year trails UCLA, 15-5. Women's volleyball earned USC's five points with a 3-0 victory over UCLA on Oct. 18.

Sharing The Spotlight
The Women of Troy are once again the epitome of a 'Team' effort. It is hard to distinguish the best players on the squad, with three players averaging more than 3.0 kills per game, two players splitting the setting duties, three players averaging nearly 3.0 digs per outing and both starting middle blockers tallying nearly 1.20 blocks per game.

Pac-10 Standings
With two victories last week, the Women of Troy remain in the lead for the conference title. USC (14-1) sits just one match ahead of Stanford (13-2) with three conference matches remaining this season. The next five Pac-10 teams are bunched from third to seventh place with only a match separating them.

Undefeated No Longer
The nation's two remaining undefeated teams got knocked off last week. Hawai'i was beat by Stanford on Nov. 10 and dropped to 23-1 (.958) overall. UC Santa Barbara fell to Pepperdine on Nov. 6 to fall to 24-1 (.960) overall. USC (21-1, .955) is now one of six teams among the top 25 with only one loss (Florida, Nebraska and Eastern Washington are the other three).

USC Holding On To Best Record In 25 Years
With a 21-1 record USC is still holding on to its best record in 25 years. In 1977 the Women of Troy captured the AIAW National Championship and finished the season with a 38-0 record - the first undefeated record ever logged by a women's volleyball team in NCAA or AIAW history.

Match Recaps
vs. Oregon
- Behind top hitting performances from April Ross and Katie Olsovsky, USC eased past Oregon, 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-23), on Nov. 8 at McArthur Court. Six USC attackers hit above .300 on the night. Olsovsky led both teams with 12 total kills, a .450 attack percentage and five blocks, while Ross added 10 kills and hit .429. The Trojans held the Ducks to a .112 attack percentage and four team blocks. The Trojans collected 12.0 team blocks and 49 kills off of 105 attacks (.333). Oregon pulled within one (11-10) at the start of the first game, but was forced to watch as the Women of Troy used a 14-2 run to mount a 13-point advantage en route to the 30-20 win. The Ducks were able to match USC to a 6-6 tie in game two, but an 8-1 Women of Troy rally put six points (13-7) between the squads. Before Oregon had the opportunity to mount a comeback, USC embarked on a 11-0 run, eventually overpowering Oregon in game two, 30-21. Midway through game three (15-12), Oregon had managed to stay close to the Trojans, but the match-up ended the same. USC sealed the Pac-10 victory with a 30-23 decision in the final game.

vs. Oregon State - Emily Adams had a match-high 16 kills on a .560 hitting performance to lead USC to a 3-0 sweep of Oregon State on Nov. 9 at Gill Coliseum. Game scores were 30-27, 30-18, and 30-17. The Beavers kept it close against the Women of Troy in game one, but USC dominated the final two games to pick up the win. OSU was down by as many as five points on three occasions in the opening game before coming back to tie the score at 26-26. After USC scored back-to-points on an Adams' kill and a Beaver error to take a two-point lead, OSU again responded with a kill to come within one point. But the Women of Troy put the game away after scoring on an OSU hitting error and a kill from Katie Olsovsky. Despite holding OSU to a .143 hitting percentage in the first game, the Trojans were also limited to a .186 mark in the outing. The tide turned in the next two games. OSU hit .158 in game two and -.077 in game three, for a combined .086 mark for the match. USC, on the other hand, continued to improve and hit .429 in game two and .531 in game three to finish the night at a .368 clip.

Opponents Have Difficulty Measuring Up To Adams
At 6-foot-5, sophomore middle blocker Emily Adams is hard to match on the other side of the net. She leads the team - and ranks second in the Pac-10 and third in the nation - with a .417 attack percentage. On the block, she is second on the team and fifth in the conference with a 1.28 blocks per game average.

Mexican National Team Standout Declared Eligible
Bibiana Candelas received full clearance from the NCAA on Oct. 24. Candelas, a 6-foot-5 middle blocker from Torren, Mexico, missed the first two weeks of the season while competing with the Mexican National Team at the World Championships in Dresden, Germany. She arrived on campus on Sept. 9 and began practicing with the team, but was not allowed to compete while the NCAA reviewed her eligibility. Candelas joined the team on the trip to the Washington schools and has appeared in five of the six matches since then.

Candelas is the Trojans' first international recruit since Jasmina Marinkovic was recruited in 1995 from Uzice, Serbia, by former USC head coach Lisa Love. Marinkovic went on to become a two-time All-American with the Women of Troy before graduating in May, 1999.

Burdine and Ross Provide 1-2 Punch
Junior outside hitter April Ross is never alone out on the floor. If it's not Ross getting every dig, outside attack and kill, it's sophomore outside hitter Keao Burdine. On a team that has six attackers who can get their share of kills against any opponent, Ross and Burdine are the Women of Troy's 1-2 punch. Together they account for 7.03 kills, 5.99 digs, 0.59 service aces, 1.05 blocks and 8.16 points per game. The two have tallied 612 of USC's 1,654 total points this season.

Black Unis Make Two Appearances
The Women of Troy saved something special for the Arizona Wildcats (Sept. 21) and Stanford Cardinal (Oct. 4) by donning new black uniforms. The Trojans, who have always worn cardinal uniforms on the road and white at home, have decided to sport the new unis for selected matches this season. The Women of Troy are 2-0 when in black.

USC Leads NCAA In Assists Thanks To Setting Duo
As of Nov. 2, the Trojans have led the nation in team assists with a 16.62 assist per game average (1.58 ahead of second-place UCLA). Ironically, the Women of Troy don't have a setter ranked in the Top 25 nationally or even among the Top 5 in the Pac-10. This is because USC uses two setters. Running a 6-2 offense, USC boasts the talent of both Toni Anderson and Tracy Lindquist and, while they sacrifice individual accolades, together they lead the nation's No. 1 team. Anderson and Lindquist average 8.63 and 6.43 assists per game, respectively.

UCLA Connections
UCLA defensive specialist Chrissie Zartman and USC setter Tracy Lindquist are offseason partners on the beach volleyball circuit. Together they won the inaugural 2002 World Beach Volleyball Championships this summer, five AAU Pro Beach Championships and became the youngest players to ever receive an AAA beach volleyball rating *** The father and grandfather of UCLA sophomore Brynn Murphy both played football at USC Her father, George, lettered in 1944 and 1946-48 *** April Ross and UCLA sophomore outside hitter Heather Cullen were prep teammates at Newport Harbor High in Newport Beach, Calif. *** Reserve defensive specialist Kristen Anderson and UCLA freshman outside hitter Teryn Spragg were prep teammates at Manhattan Beach Mira Costa High.

A Trojan and a Bruin Get Together
Senior Tracy Lindquist and beach volleyball partner Chrissie Zartman (UCLA sophomore libero) represented the U.S. and captured the gold medal in late June at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World University Games in Guadeloupe of the French Antilles. At 5-7 and 5-5, respectively, Lindquist and Zartman were the shortest competitors in the tournament. In 1997, at ages 16 and 13, Lindquist and Zartman became the youngest players ever to receive an AAA beach rating.

Burdine Follows In Lindquists' Footsteps
Sophomore Keao Burdine stepped in for Tracy Lindquist and paired with UCLA's Chrissie Zartman for the 2002 Under-21 World Beach Volleyball Championship in Catania, Italy, not long after Lindquist and Zartman captured the world title. Although Lindquist is Zartman's long-time partner, she was too old to qualify for the under-21 event. Representing the United States, the new team advanced to the quarterfinal round (fifth place), but was eliminated by third-place finisher Maria Salgado Rufino and Talita Rocha of Brazil, 21-13, 21-15.

Injury Update
No injuries to report.

2002 Team Captains
This year's team captain, as voted on by the players, is senior Lauren Killian. Teams must have a captain on the floor at all times, so junior April Ross will act as the floor captain when Killian is not present.

Reaching New Heights
The 2002 squad boasts the tallest lineup of hitters and blockers in recent history at USC. The Trojans' front line measures at a 6-foot-3 average height and as a team USC stands at 6-0.

USC Takes Over USA Team
Head Coach Mick Haley has ensured himself one of the best trained teams in the country. For the second-consecutive summer, USC had six players (Katie Olsovsky, April Ross, Emily Adams, Tracy Lindquist, Keao Burdine and Alicia Robinson) train with the Women's National A2 Team in Colorado Springs, Colo. - this is by far more than any other school (next on the list is Stanford and Nebraska with two apiece).

Head Coach Mick Haley
Mick Haley is in his second season as head coach of the Women of Troy. Though hired in 1999 to replace former head coach Lisa Love, Haley completed his term as head coach of the U.S.A. Women's National Team before joining the Trojans in 2001. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he led the United States to an unexpected fourth-place finish. Haley coached Texas for 17 seasons (1980-1996) and led the Longhorns to two national championships. He boasts a 8185-193-1 (.809) overall record, 567-142 (.800) NCAA Division I record and a 179-13 (.932) conference mark.
