Giudice's Golden Goal In 100th Minute Lifts UW Over No. 5 Cal 2-1

Nov. 15, 2002

SEATTLE, Wash. - Junior Sean Giudice's golden goal at the final horn of the first overtime period lifted Washington men's soccer over fifth-ranked Cal, 2-1, at Husky Soccer Field, Friday evening. UW improves to 6-9-3 overall and 3-6-0 in the Pac-10, while Cal falls to 13-4-2 and 6-2-1 in conference action.

After entering the match at the start of overtime just 10 minutes earlier, Giudice scored on a header off freshman Mike Chabala's corner kick at exactly the 100-minute mark.

Both teams battled through 71 minutes of scoreless soccer until Cal took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal from Carl Acosta in the 72nd minute. In the 80th minute, a Golden Bear hand ball in the box set up a penalty kick opportunity for the Huskies which junior Seth Marsh cashed in on to tie the game 1-1.

The score after regulation remained tied and the teams headed into the first sudden-death overtime period. It looked as if a second overtime period was in order, until the Huskies late offensive run forced a corner kick with about five ticks left on the clock. Chabala launched the kick in front of the goal and found Giudice who headed the ball past Cal goalkeeper Josh Saunders at the horn.

Washington outshot the Golden Bears 16-13 including a 2-1 advantage in overtime. Freshman Jeff Hoover and senior Dayo Oyetuga led the UW offensive attack with four shots each. Tyson Wahl led all Cal players with three shots. UW freshman goalkeeper Chris Eylander tallied five saves while Saunders did not record a single save on UW's 16 shots.

The Huskies will play their regular season finale against ninth-ranked Stanford Sunday, at 2 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field. The third-place Cardinal defeated Oregon State today 4-1. UW will recognize its four seniors, Kyle Fukuchi, Aaron Heinzen, Dayo Oyetuga and Zac Tallman prior to the match.
