No. 17 WSU Volleyball Sweeps By California
Nov. 15, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University volleyball team defeated California 30-19, 30-19, 30-27, Friday night before 1,379 fans at Bohler Gym. This was WSU's 13th consecutive win over California in Pullman.
Washington State moves to 18-7 overall, 8-7 in Pac-10 Conference play while California drops to 16-10 overall, 6-10 in league action.
WSU's Adrian Hankoff, LaToya Harris and Chelsie Schafer combined for 33 kills. Cougar setter Brenn Larson had 38 assists and a career-high four service aces. Libero Kortney Jamtaas led all players with 24 digs. Holly Harris and LaToya Harris had four blocks each.
Mia Jerkov led the Golden Bears with 11 kills (-.040) and 13 digs. California hit a mere .033 for the match while the Cougars hit .203. WSU out-blocked the Bears eight to four.
The Cougars dominated the first two games and let a six-point lead in the third game slip to two points before pulling out the 30-27 win. This win avenged a 3-2 loss at Cal last month for the Cougars.
'It doesn't matter what the game plan is, because as long as we play well, that's all it takes and we played so well tonight,' Washington State head coach Cindy Fredrick said. 'We were very loose and very confident. When we played at Cal we made a lot of unforced errors and we did not make unforced errors tonight until the third game.'
'We didn't doubt each other at all, in the third game when they started coming back I know we didn't panic at all,' LaToya Harris said. 'We knew that we were going to win and everything was going smoothly.'
'What we weren't digging we were blocking tonight,' Fredrick said. 'We blocked so well. If you pick one thing that this team has improved on 100 percent, it would be blocking.'
'Last time I second-guessed myself when playing against Jerkov,' Larson said. 'I didn't stay with our game plan in the match down at Cal and we did this time because we worked on it and drilled on it so much.'
Washington State hosts No. 1 Stanford (25-3, 14-2), Saturday, Nov. 16, in the final regular season match at Bohler Gym.
