Stanford, Calif. - Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) scored two goals and Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) added three assists as the No. 1 Stanford women's soccer team defeated Cal Poly 4-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night at Maloney Field in front of 1,817 fans. The Mustangs threatened in the 33rd minute when Heather Bryan fired a shot that was saved by Stanford's Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA). The Cardinal took the 2-0 advantage into halftime and outshot the Mustangs 15-4, lead by Wallis' five shots.
Ward and Wallis connected again at 55:56 off a free kick. Ward picked up her third assist of the match when she played the ball to Wallis who beat the defender and put the ball into the right corner for her second score and 12th of the season. Stanford added its final goal at 71:21 when Jennifer Farenbaugh (Reseda, CA) found the back of the net from 30 yards out, increasing the Cardinal lead to four.
'It was an excellent team performance tonight,' said co-coach Paul Sapsford. 'I would like to congratulate Cal Poly, they fought to the very every end. It was a great win for us and we are looking forward to our game with Cal.'
