Beavers Lose To No. 16 Arizona In Three Games
Nov. 16, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz. - Karah Rhoades hit .296 with a team-high 11 kills for Oregon State, but No. 16 Arizona hit .350 as a team to beat the Beavers in three games Saturday night. The Wildcats (14-9, 10-6 Pac-10) defeated OSU 30-27, 30-28, 30-20 to win their 13th straight against the Beavers. OSU (7-18, 2-14) hasn't won in Tucson since 1993.
Rhoades was the only Beaver to finish with double-figure kills; three players finished with seven apiece. Rhoades also was the only OSU player other than setter Laura Collins (four kills, .571) to hit above .230 for the match. The Beavers hit just .175, while Arizona had three players in double figures and three players who hit above .400. Lisa Rutledge had a match-high 14 kills, and Bre Ladd hit .421 with 11 kills.
Nikki Neuburger recorded her 1,000th career dig, becoming the 10th Beaver to reach that milestone, but she was held to single digits in back-to-back matches for first time this season. She had seven against Arizona, giving her 1,004 for her career. Allison Lawrence and Megan McMillan had 10 apiece to lead the Beavers on Saturday. UA's Kelli Mulvaney had a match-high 13.
The Beavers put together a solid run in game one to overcome an eight-point deficit, but UA prevailed in the end. OSU was down 20-12 but went on a 9-2 run to edge within a point at 22-21. Rhoades had a kill and two aces during that span, and the Beavers also took advantage of three UA hitting errors. OSU tied the game at 26-26 but was never able to take the lead.
OSU trailed by as many as six (25-19) in game two, but the Beavers scored five straight, including four off Arizona errors, to cut the lead to one. OSU tied the score twice, but Arizona eventually won on a kill from Kim Glass.
The Beavers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game three, but the Wildcats strung together a 4-0 run of their own to tie the game. A 3-0 Arizona run a few plays later gave the Wildcats an 8-6 lead, and they stayed ahead for the remainder of the match.
