Cougars Conclude Exhibition Season With A 76-53 Triumph Over Denmark

Nov. 16, 2002

PULLMAN, Wash. - Lindsey Egeland scored a game-high 20 points and Bianca McCall turned in a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Washington State Cougars to a 76-53 women's basketball exhibition win over Horsholm BBC (Denmark), Saturday at Friel Court.

The win marked the second consecutive exhibition victory for the Cougars in the past week. WSU defeated P & P Lady Express 82 -57, Nov. 9.

Of Egeland's 20 points, 13 came in the second half as the junior from Missoula, Mont., shot 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from the field for the game. McCall's double-double performance was her second in as many games in the exhibition season.

The Cougars shot 30-64 (46.9 percent) from the field and out-rebounded Denmark 50-30 including 26-12 in the second half.

WSU stumbled out of the gates early, falling behind 20-11 in the game's opening 7:35. The Cougars rallied with an 11-0 run, which was capped by a trey from Egeland, to take a 22-20 lead at the 7:51 mark of the first half. Both Egeland and McCall accounted for all the points in the run.

Denmark recovered to take a 25-24 lead with 4:41 remaining but a Jami Clevenger bucket at the 3:42 mark gave the Cougars the lead for good at 26-25. Clevenger's basket sparked an 11-2 WSU run as the Cougars went into halftime with a 35-27 advantage.

'I was unhappy with the way we were playing defense,' said WSU Coach Sherri Murrell of the Cougars' play in the first half. 'Denmark was getting a lot of free open shots on us and I felt we weren't crashing the boards that well. I got in their faces a little bit and told them I know they can do it and they came out and did it in the second half.'

Denmark pulled to within 37-31 in the early stages of the second half but an 8-1 run gave the Cougars a 45-32 lead at the 14:46 mark. WSU would maintain its double-digit advantage for the remainder of the game.

'I'm excited because they got down and they just chipped away,' Murrell said of overcoming the early 20-11 deficit. 'I told them the only way they are going to get back in the game is by their defense. We controlled the boards and a lot of steals created offensive points for us. I was really proud of them.'

WSU opens the regular season at home, Friday, Nov. 22 against Wyoming at 7 p.m.
