Nov. 16, 2002
PALO ALTO, Calif. -Senior Courtney Inman's seventh-place individual finish led Washington women's cross country to a fourth-place team finish at the NCAA West Regional Championships in Palo Alto, Calif., Saturday. The Husky men finished sixth overall, notching their best team performance since a sixth-place finish in 1998.
Inman, who repeated her seventh-place finish from the Pac-10 Championships two weeks ago, earned one of the four individual berths to the NCAA Championships which will be held in Terre Haute, Ind., Nov. 25. The Husky women will wait to see if they are one of 13 teams selected as NCAA at-large berths on Monday. The UW men's squad will do the same.
Like they did at the Pac-10 Championships, Stanford swept both the men's and women's team and individual titles. Stanford had four of the top five finishers on both the men's and women's sides. Sophomore Alicia Craig won the women's 6,000-meter race in 20:39, while junior Donald Sage captured his second-straight West Regional crown, completing the men's 10,000m course in 30:13.
The Arizona State women and the Oregon men took home runner-up team finishes and the other automatic team berths to the NCAA Championships.
Washington's women repeated their fourth-place finish from last year. Including Inman, UW had two finishers in the top-20. Sophomore Lindsey Egerdahl placed 20th in 22:11. Following Egerdhal were freshman Laura Hodgson (22:30, 31st), sophomore Jamie Gibbs (22:32, 32nd), senior Kate Bradshaw (22:34, 34th), sophomore Laura Halvorsen (22:49, 42nd) and junior Kate Spigel (23:06, 55th).
For the Husky men, junior Ben Koss was the team's highest finisher, crossing the finish line in 23rd-place in 31:26. Junior Eric Garner, Washington's high-finisher in the previous four races, placed 28th in 31:43. Garner was followed by sophomore Michael Kiter (31:56, 37th), junior Todd Arnold (32:00, 41st), freshman Mark Mandi (32:05, 43rd), junior Dustin Duke (32:19, 50th) and sophomore Matt Topping (32:27, 57th).
