Women's Soccer Drops Overtime Heartbreaker At UCLA
Nov. 17, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Kendal Billingsley scored at 103:18 Sunday to give the No. 3 UCLA Bruins the 1-0 victory over the USC Trojans in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Drake Stadium. The No. 7-seeded Bruins advance to the third round next weekend and will host Texas A&M.USC finishes the season with an 11-8-3 record. It was the first loss in nine overtime games (5-1-3) this season for the Trojans.
The Women of Troy generated their best effort of the season against the Bruins in a physical contest. USC played for the counterattack as UCLA peppered the Trojans' defense with a 22-2 margin in shots.
In the second half, USC sophomore goalkeeper Julie Peterson made a save on a penalty kick by UCLA's Nandi Pryce at 58:37. Peterson made 10 saves in goal, tying a season high that was set also against UCLA on Oct. 27. Defender Nikki Goza blocked a shot at the goal line by Stacy Lindstrom at 77:36 as the Women of Troy forced the game into overtime.
'I'm just proud of this team,' said USC head coach Jim Millinder. 'This was probably our best effort all season. We had great chances today and were one good pass away from winning the game. I thought after Julie's stop on the penalty kick that the soccer gods were looking down on us today. Our players left it all on the field.'
'I thought our balls to the offensive side were a little off today,' said senior forward Ali Fennell. 'We were resilient and no one gave up.'
'The defense really stepped up today,' said Peterson. 'During the week, we worked on penalty kicks. We tried to clear the ball out on UCLA's goal, but it just bounced the wrong way. We didn't concede anything to them.'
USC loses only three seniors from this year's team after making its fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. It is the fourth time in five years that the Trojans have reached the second round of the tournament.
