Nov. 18, 2002
LOS ANGELES - UCLA men's tennis coach Billy Martin announced the signing of local tennis standout Robert Yim (Glendale, Calif.) to a national letter of intent Monday. Yim is currently the No. 1-ranked player in the United States Tennis Association Boys' 18s singles rankings.
This past August, Yim reached the semifinals in singles at the USTA Super National Hardcourts in Kalamazoo, Mich. He was a main draw participant in all four of the junior grand slams in 2002, reaching the round of 16 at both the Australian and U.S. Opens. In 2001, he was a semifinalist at the prestigious Eddie Herr International Tennis Championships in Bradenton, Fla. He also participated in the 2001 Burger King Orange Bowl, a top-flight international tournament. In addition to his No. 1 ranking in the U.S. and California, Yim has been ranked as high as No. 22 in the ITF World Junior Rankings.
'I'm extremely happy that we were able to sign the top-ranked junior in the country,' said Martin. 'With us losing an excellent crop of seniors at the end of this year, I expect Robert to come in and maintain UCLA's tradition as one of the top teams in the country.'
Yim, who previously attended Glendale High School, is currently home schooled.
