Men's Soccer To Play At Portland In NCAA First-Round Matchup
Nov. 18, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
The Oregon State men's soccer team discovered on Monday that, for the first time in school history, it has been selected to play in the 48-team NCAA Men's Soccer Championships.
OSU, fresh off its school-record 13th win last Sunday over No. 6 California, will travel to Portland for a first-round matchup tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. at UP's Harry A. Merlo Field.
'This is a combination of four years of working and persevering,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'I'm proud of the guys, especially the seniors and the fact that they'll have this experience.
'This is one more step toward where we want to be as a program; this is just the beginning. We are not going to rest on our laurels - we want to go as far as we can every year,' Taylor said.
The Beavers (13-7-0) and Pilots (12-5-1) met on Oct. 2 in Corvallis, and OSU came away with a 2-1 win on a goal in the last minute by Joe Zaher. OSU has won the last two meetings with UP.
The winner of the Oregon State-Portland game will travel to Stanford to take on the Cardinal (14-4-2) on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Stanford has a first-round bye.
