Softball Signs Four Prep Standouts For 2004
Nov. 18, 2002
Oregon State softball head coach Kirk Walker announced Monday that four student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play for the Beavers in 2004. Brianne McGowan of Reno, Nev., Ta'tyana McElroy of Los Angeles, Calif., Mia Longfellow of Ramona, Calif., and Sherina Galvan of Moreno Valley, Calif., will all join the OSU squad.
McGowan will come to Oregon State next season after graduating from Wooster High School where she was a three-year all-state pitcher. The 6-2 hurler has led Wooster High to three consecutive Nevada State Championships and three top-25 rankings by ESPN and USA Today. McGowan was the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year for softball and was named Nevada Prep Athlete of the Year in 2002. A three-sport all-star, McGowan has also been an all-state selection in volleyball and basketball.
'Brianne was a huge signing for us,' said Walker. 'She brings a tremendous amount of physical size and strength. She's a power pitcher with loads of potential and should be a strong force in the Pac-10 during her career.'
McElroy will join Oregon State after graduating from Washington High School where she has been a three-time All-CIF Los Angeles City selection. The 6-0 pitcher plays for the Monarchs travel team, which has competed in the RBI World Series Championship the last three years.
'Ta'tyana is another tall, lanky, power pitcher,' said Walker. 'She is extremely dynamic and I think she'll be very effective in the Pac-10 - she's definitely a diamond in the rough. Ta'tyana is the first student-athlete from the inner-city program of RBI Monarchs to get a Division I scholarship.'
Longfellow, an outfielder, will come to OSU from Ramona High School. Longfellow is a three-time All-CIF selection and three-time All-Valley League pick. She is also a three-year member of the ASA 18U Gold Worth Firecrackers.
'Mia is a great defensive player who will make an immediate impact for us in the outfield,' said Walker. 'She will also bring tremendous speed to our offense.'
Galvan, an infielder, will join the Beavers after graduating from Moreno Valley High School. Galvan has been a member of the Gordon's Panthers ASA 18U Gold squad, the same team that current OSU players Adrienne Alo and Vanessa Iapala competed on.
'Sherina is a little dynamo,' said Walker. 'She is a powerful, dynamic player for her size. Defensively she is one of the best third baseman coming out of high school and will be a strong offensive performer for us.'
Not only does the signing class present top-caliber athletes, but top-caliber students. All four signees are honor roll members.
'Overall this group is very, very strong academically,' said Walker. 'They come from very strong and committed families. They are probably one of our strongest signing classes ever since I've been at Oregon State.'
The Beavers have made four consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament appearances and have compiled four straight 40-plus win seasons.
Oregon State opens the 2003 season on January 31, at the Southern Utah Tournament.
