The Facts
The No. 1-ranked USC women's volleyball team (22-1, 15-1 Pac-10) clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 title last week with its 3-0 win over UCLA on Nov. 15. By capturing at least one win this week, the Women of Troy will claim sole possession of the 2002 Pac-10 title - their second-ever Pac-10 conference championship (USC shared the 2000 Pac-10 title with Arizona). The Trojans host No. 16 Arizona on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m., and Arizona State on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Lyon Center and can be heard live on www.usctrojans.com (To find the USC audio broadcast go to the 'Multimedia' link at the top of the homepage). The USC-Arizona match will be televised by Fox Sports Net on a tape-delay basis starting Saturday, Nov. 23 (see below and check local listings for additional air times). The Women of Troy will honor seniors Tracy Lindquist, Lauren Killian and Julie Mariani before the start of the USC-Arizona State match on Friday.

The Rankings
USC reclaimed the No. 1 spot this week after then-ranked No. 1 Stanford fell to Washington State last week. The Women of Troy spent two weeks at No. 2 after holding the top spot for the previous seven week-period (the Women of Troy made their first jump to No. 1 on Sept. 16). USC earned a No. 5 final ranking in 2001 by both USA Today and Volleyball magazine (Volleyball is no longer producing a weekly poll as of Oct. 20) and entered the 2002 season at No. 3.

Keep Your Eye On...
With the postseason right around the corner, keep an eye on USC's three All-American candidates April Ross, Katie Olsovsky and Emily Adams!

Women Of Troy Look To Capture Sole Possession of Pac-10 Title
With its win over the Bruins on Nov. 15, USC guaranteed at least a share of the 2002 conference championship. This is only the second-ever Pac-10 title for the Women of Troy, who have won four conference titles (1976, 1977 and 1980 WCAA champions, 2002 Pac-10 co-champions) in their 26-year program history. In 2000, USC shared the conference crown with Arizona after splitting the season series with the Wildcats and falling to UCLA for a 16-2 school-best record in the Pac-10. If the Women of Troy post two wins this week it will establish a new program-best. USC was picked to finish second in this year's Pac-10 preseason coaches poll.

Senior Salute
Friday's match will mark the final regular season match for USC's three seniors - opposite hitter Lauren Killian, setter Tracy Lindquist and defensive specialist Julie Mariani. First recruited under former head coach Lisa Love, these three seniors have so far led the Women of Troy to three NCAA appearances, including the 2000 NCAA Final Four, and two Pac-10 Championships (2000, 2002).

Lindquist has been one of the team's most valuable all-around players over the last four seasons. In head coach Mick Haley's words, 'you can not afford to not have her on the court at all times.' Lindquist has started and shared setting duties in every match since her freshman year and will likely finish her career at USC with nearly 2,700 assists, placing her among the Trojans' top five all time setters. She currently boasts a 6.69 career assist and 2.02 career dig average. She also comes from a family of Trojans including her father who played volleyball, basketball and baseball, and her great grandfather, Hobbs Adams, who captained the SC football team in 1925 and made it to age 99 as the second-oldest USC letterwinner (Adams passed away on Sept. 27, 2002).

Serving as the team captain for the second straight year, Killian has been the driving force behind the Women of Troy's success over the last four seasons. Her organization and leadership are unmatched. With a hard-to-stop right-side attack, she is currently averaging a .300 career attack percentage - a mark that would put her among USC's career top 10. At the end of her career she will compile nearly 600 kills and 300 blocks. Her dedication to USC comes from a rich Trojan family tradition, including her father, Don, who led the Trojan men's volleyball team to the 1977 NCAA Championship.

Always prepared with an outstanding serve or great backrow play, Mariani has been a key to USC's defense and offense over the last four seasons. She helped lead the squad to the 1999 NCAA Tournament thanks to her talent at the line, and en route, captured a few USC records. As a freshman she averaged a USC single-season record 0.47 service aces per game. She also finished the season with 50 total aces - a mark that ranks third among the Trojans' all-time season records. By the time she leaves USC, Mariani will have collected nearly 100 service aces and 400 digs.

Sharing The Spotlight
The Women of Troy are once again the epitome of a 'Team' effort. It is hard to distinguish the best players on the squad, with three players averaging more than 3.08 kills per game, two players splitting the setting duties, three players averaging more than 3.0 digs per outing and both starting middle blockers tallying nearly 1.22 blocks per game.

USC Holding On To Best Record In 25 Years
With a 22-1 record USC is still holding on to its best record in 25 years. In 1977 the Women of Troy captured the AIAW National Championship and finished the season with a 38-0 record - the first undefeated record ever logged by a women's volleyball team in NCAA or AIAW history.

Arizona Connections
Sophomores Alicia Robinson and Emily Adams both grew up in the Phoenix area. Robinson prepped at Central High and was the 2000 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year. Adams prepped at Xavier College Prep where she was the 4A-5A Arizona Player of the Year as a senior. The two were club volleyball teammates throughout high school. They are the daughters of some well-known former Phoenix Suns, Truck Robinson and Alvan Adams, respectively.

Match Recaps
vs. #19 UCLA
- Alicia Robinson recorded a team-high 12 kills and Emily Adams led with 10 blocks as USC swept No. 19 UCLA (30-24, 30-21, 30-23) on Nov. 15 at Pauley Pavilion. The Women of Troy outhit the Bruins by a narrow .182-.176 margin in the first game, but USC took control of the match in the second and third games, thanks in part to the play of Katie Olsovsky and Lauren Killian. Killian led all players, hitting .583 for the match with seven kills and no errors. Olsovsky hit .467 to go with nine kills on the evening. In the opening game of the match, the teams kept it close, staying within one point as late as 24-23 before the Women of Troy scored on six of the final seven rallies to win 30-24. Game two was not as close. USC took advantage of UCLA's .095 attack percentage in the game en route to a 30-21 win, taking a 2-0 lead to the locker rooms at the break. UCLA led game three as late as 23-22, but got stuck on that number, falling 30-23 in the third and final game of the match.

Debbie Green To Be Inducted To USC Hall of Fame
Debbie Green, regarded as America's greatest women's volleyball setter, is among 24 Trojan luminaries that have been selected to the sixth class of USC's Athletic Hall of Fame and they will be honored at a gala black tie induction dinner on May 3, 2003, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Green was a two-time All-American (1976-77) and led the Women of Troy to AIAW national championships both of those years (the 1977 team recorded the first-ever undefeated season in collegiate women's volleyball, 38-0). A two-year letterwinner (1976-77), she was named to two U.S. Olympic teams (1980 and 1984), helping the American women win a silver medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1995, the United States Volleyball Association Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. A product of Westminster High, she has been an assistant coach with the Long Beach State women's team since 1986.

Opponents Have Difficulty Measuring Up To Adams
At 6-foot-5, sophomore middle blocker Emily Adams is hard to match on the other side of the net. She leads the team - and ranks second in the Pac-10 and third in the nation - with a .411 attack percentage. On the block, she is second on the team and fourth in the conference with a 1.22 blocks per game average.

Burdine and Ross Provide 1-2 Punch
Junior outside hitter April Ross is never alone out on the floor. If it's not Ross getting every dig, outside attack and kill, it's sophomore outside hitter Keao Burdine. On a team that has six attackers who can get their share of kills against any opponent, Ross and Burdine are the Women of Troy's 1-2 punch. Together they account for 6.97 kills, 6.02 digs, 0.59 service aces, 1.05 blocks and 8.10 points per game. The two have tallied 631.5 of USC's 1,728 total points this season.

USC Second In NCAA Assists Thanks To Setting Duo
As of Nov. 11, the Trojans rank second in the nation in team assists with a 16.69 assist per game average (0.04 behind first-place Hawai'i and 1.38 ahead of second-place UCLA). Ironically, the Women of Troy don't have a setter ranked in the Top 25 nationally or even among the Top 5 in the Pac-10. This is because USC uses two setters. Running a 6-2 offense, USC boasts the talent of both Toni Anderson and Tracy Lindquist and, while they sacrifice individual accolades, together they lead the nation's No. 1 team. Anderson and Lindquist average 8.68 and 6.49 assists per game, respectively.

Trojans Welcome First International Recruit in Seven Years
Bibiana Candelas is the Trojans' first international recruit since Jasmina Marinkovic was recruited in 1995 from Uzice, Serbia, by former USC head coach Lisa Love. (Marinkovic went on to become a two-time All-American with the Women of Troy before graduating in May, 1999.) Candelas, a 6-foot-5 middle blocker from Torren, Mexico, missed the first two weeks of the season while competing with the Mexican National Team at the World Championships in Dresden, Germany. She arrived on campus on Sept. 9 and began practicing with the team, but did not start competing with the team until she received full clearance from the NCAA on Oct. 24.

Head Coach Mick Haley
Mick Haley is in his second season as head coach of the Women of Troy. Though hired in 1999 to replace former head coach Lisa Love, Haley completed his term as head coach of the U.S.A. Women's National Team before joining the Trojans in 2001. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he led the United States to an unexpected fourth-place finish. Haley coached Texas for 17 seasons (1980-1996) and led the Longhorns to two national championships. He boasts a 819-193-1 (.809) overall record, 568-142 (.800) NCAA Division I record and a 180-13 (.933) conference mark.
