Ritzenthaler Pins Opponent To Secure Stanford's 25-16 Win

Nov. 20, 2002

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford (2-1) hosted San Francisco State (0-1) tonight in Burnham Pavilion and posted a 25-16 win over the Division II sixth-ranked Gators. The Cardinal recorded two pins as 2002 NCAA Qualifier and returning win-leader Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) and redshirt freshman Shawn Ritzenthaler (Columbus, OH/Worthington Kilbourne) both scored their falls in the second period.

The Gators took the early 3-0 match lead with a decision at 125, but Stanford returned with four straight wins. At 133 pounds, sophomore Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) posted a 10-2 major decision for his third win of the season. Senior Justin Walker (Otis Orchards, WA/East Valley) tacked on a 13-8 decision before sophomore Scott Polley (Bonner Springs, KS/Bonner Springs) earned a 7-6 decision.

Sophomore Gentry then took to the mat at 157 pounds and jumped to the early 4-1 lead before posting a quick takedown in the second period and scoring a pin to take the bout at 3:51. At 165, Gators senior Josh McDonald earned a 2-1 victory to bring his squad within ten points at 16-6. The Cardinal's impressive redshirt freshman Ryan Hagen (Sidney, MT/Sidney) held on to win a 7-6 decision, but the Gators Mauricio Wright, the defending national champion scored a pin and fellow senior Drew Dunbar notched a 15-5 major decision at 197 to bring San Francisco State within striking distance at 19-16.

With the match on the line, heavyweight Ritzenthaler scored his first takedown of the match 40 seconds into the match and held his position to accumulate over two minutes of riding time before Chris Bostick earned an escape in the waning moments of the first period. Ritzenthaler started down in the second period and scored a reversal and then held for the pin at 4:03, giving Stanford the 25-16 victory and his first collegiate victory.

Stanford will head to southern California this weekend for its Pac-10 opener against Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Nov. 22nd at 7 p.m. before competing at the California Open (in Fullerton) on Saturday.
