Husky Golf Team Adds Four to Lineup

Nov. 21, 2002

Washington women's golf coach Mary Lou Mulflur announced today that four standout golfers have signed national letters of intent with the Huskies. The group includes Ashley Bickerton of Ottawa, Ontario, Courtney McCracken of Eagle, Idaho, Amber Prange of Noblesville, Indiana and Amy Wang of Kirkland.

'This class has an opportunity to be one of our best ever before it's all said and done,' says 20th-year coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'We are ranked seventh in the nation after the fall portion of our schedule. You combine that with this class of golfers coming in and we're having a great season.'

Wang is a senior at Lake Washington High School. She won the Pacific Northwest Girl's Junior Championship in 2001. She participated in the U.S. Women's Sectional Qualifier last summer along with current Huskies Lindsay Morgan and Paige Mackenzie. She finished third at the USGA Girls Junior Amateur State Qualifier to earn one of four spots for the USGA Junior Amateur National Championship. Was a member of the North Pacific Junior Ladies Team that represented the United States in international competition against Canada.

'I feel Amy is the best player in the state this year and we are very fortunate that she chose to stay at home to play her collegiate golf at Washington, 'Mulflur says. 'She is very talented as well as consistent. She can be as good as she wants to be.'

Bickerton did not play in any America Junior Golf Association events until last summer. She made up for her late start by winning two of the four events where she competed. She took medalist honors at the AJGA Future Links and the Lessing AJGA Classic. She was an honorable mention selection to the 2002 Polo Junior All-America team. She won the World Junior Challenge in Florida in 2001 and was a member of Team Canada in 2001 and 2002 at the Junior World Championships. Bickerton attends Ashbury College Prep in Ottawa. The school does not sponsor a golf program, but she has also competed in volleyball, cross country and basketball.

'Ashley Bickerton is a bit of an unknown but a tremendous talent,' Mulflur says. 'She's had a very limited exposure in the AJGA circuit and, because of the weather in Ottawa, not been afforded the luxury of being able to play year round. I believe she is a late bloomer that will only get better.'

McCracken won the Idaho high school state championship in 2002 and was the district tournament medalist in 2001 and 2002. She helped Eagle High School to back-to-back state titles as a freshman and sophomore and a third-place finish last year. She won the Idaho Junior Championship in 2001. She placed fourth at the AJGA Championship at Trophy Lake and was the Nampa Amateur medalist in 2002. She set the course record at Boise Ranch Golf Course with a round of 63 to help finish second at the Southern Idaho Ladies Amateur.

'Courtney has the ability to take it low and is from all accounts she is a very hard worker,' Mulflur says. 'She just goes about her business on the course and has a wonderful ability to stay focused and not get distracted by things she cannot control.'

Prange comes from a family of golfers, including her father, Robert, who is a PGA professional, and older sister, Ashley, who is a junior on North Carolina's golf team and ranked 12th nationally. She also has three uncles who are PGA professionals. A three-time all-state player at Noblesville High School, Prange has earned Hamilton County Player of the Year honors two seasons in a row. She had three top-15 finishes at AJGA events last summer, including a third-place showing at the Hudson Junior Invitational. She was an honorable mention selection to the 2002 Polo Junior All-America team. She was a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Girl's Junior Championships in 2001 and won the AJGA Marsh Invitational in Kansas City last summer.

'We are thrilled to have Amber join our program,' Mulflur says. 'She is an extremely passionate competitor who will attack situations and more often than not, she prevails.'
