Cal State Fullerton Edges Stanford, 19-16

Fullerton, Calif. - Stanford (2-2, 0-1 Pac-10) opened its conference season today at Cal State Fullerton (3-0, 2-0 Pac-10), but dropped a 19-16 decision to the Titans in a tightly contested meet.
Fullerton took the first lead of the day, but at 149, sophomore Scott Polley (Bonner Springs, KS/Bonner Springs) won a 12-8 decision to tie the meet at 3-3. Last season's win-leader, sophomore Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) won his second match of the season with a 3-2 decision at 157 pounds to give the Cardinal its only lead of the day at 6-3. The Titans rallied and were able to score two decisions, a major decision and a pin to take the 19-6 lead with only three bouts to go.
The Cardinal was in position to strike with heavyweight Shawn Ritzenthaler (Powell, OH/Kilbourne) earning an 8-3 decision leaving two of Stanford's 2002 NCAA Qualifiers to close the meet. Junior Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central) posted a 7-6 decision for his first win of the year, but Stanford trailed 19-12 with only one bout to go. Sophomore Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) finished off Fullerton with a 10-1 major decision ending the meet at 19-16 in favor of the Titans.
Stanford and Fullerton will both compete in the All-California Open in Titan Gym tomorrow, Saturday, November 23rd.
