No. 1-Ranked Women of Troy Ease Past Sun Devils On Senior Night
Nov. 22, 2002
LOS ANGELES -- Middle blocker Emily Adams collected a career high 19 kills and tallied a .581 attack percentage to lead the No. 1-ranked USC women's volleyball team to 3-0 (30-24, 30-15, 30-15) victory over Arizona State in their final home match of the regular season on Friday night at the Lyon Center.
With the win, the 2002 Pac-10 Champion Women of Troy finish the conference season with a 17-1 record (24-1 overall), while the Sun Devils fall to 8-10 in the final conference standings and 12-11 overall mark.
Prior to the start of tonight's match USC honored its three seniors Lauren Killian, Tracy Lindquist and Julie Mariani. Together, they have so far led the Women of Troy to three NCAA appearances, including the 2000 NCAA Final Four, and two Pac-10 Championships (2000, 2002). All three started tonight's match.
The Trojans had little difficulty in the contest and took the opportunity to use the entire bench in the three-game victory. Aside from Adams, who led in kills and blocks (4), and April Ross, who contributed 12 kills, nine digs and a .500 hitting percentage, the Women of Troy had seven players log a .333 or better attack effort.
Arizona State started the match trailing by only a point at 7-6, but that was as close as the Sun Devils would come for the remainder of the night. Each team collected 16 kills in game one, but USC capitalized on ASU errors to secure a 30-24 opening victory.
In the final two games combined, ASU only managed to post 16 kills and could not defend against the Trojan offense. USC hit .447 and .576 in games two and three, respectively, and made only four combined errors. The Women of Troy won the last two games by identical 30-15 scores.
USC travels to seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, Nov. 26, for a 7 p.m. match at The Thunderdome to complete the 2002 regular season schedule. NCAA selections will then be announced on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m.
