Stanford Places Eight in All-California Open

Fullerton, Calif. - Stanford sent 25 wrestlers to compete in the All-California Open today in Fullerton. The Cardinal placed eight wrestlers, including two at 165 pounds. Sophomore Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) has built up an 8-0 record this season as he claimed first at 133 pounds with four wins today.
Metzler opened with an 18-1 win over Fresno State's Javier Jaurez at 133 pounds before handing teammate Paul Gross (Penn Valley, CA/Nevada Union) a 3-2 decision. The 2002 NCAA Qualifier then posted an 8-0 major decision over Cal Poly's Andy Kim to advance to the championship where he recorded a 3-0 decision over Cal State Bakersfield's Matt Sanchez to win the title at 133 pounds. Metlzer leads the team with eight wins this season.
At 149 pounds, sophomore Scott Polley (Bonner Springs, KS/Bonner Springs) claimed third place with a 4-1 record today, posting two decisions before dropping a 5-2 decision in the semifinals. Polley rallied in his next match, scoring a fall as he pinned Cal State Bakersfield's Jon Sharpe at 1:00. Polley then claimed third place with a 3-1 decision over Cal Poly's Matt Cox.
Sophomore Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) entered a 5-2 record to earn fourth place at 157 pounds. An early loss sent him to the wrestle-back brackets where he recorded a technical fall, one decision and three major decisions to get himself in the third place match. Gentry, a 2002 NCAA Qualifier and last season's win-leader, claimed fourth place as he was edged by Arizona State's Brian Stith in a 3-2 decision.
At 165 pounds, the Cardinal is deep with talent, taking two of the top six spots. Redshirt freshman Brennan Corbett (Broadbent, OR/Myrtle Point) earned fourth place while junior John Garfinkel (Quartz Hill, CA/Highland) finished in fifth. Corbett owned a 3-2 record, including a 3-2 win over Garfinkel to advance to the third place match where he dropped an 8-6 decision to TWC's Leonel Sanchez to finish in fourth place. Garfinkel posted a 9-4 decision over TWC's Risto Marttinen to take fifth place.
Junior Nathan Peterson (Georgetown, IN/Floyd Central) and freshman Ian Bork (Lawrence, KS/Free State) each finished in fifth place at 125 and 197 pounds respectively. Peterson posted two decisions and a major decision to place while Bork earned a default win, a decision and two falls (one at 30 seconds) to claim fifth in his collegiate debut.
Senior Harold Penson (Richmond Heights, OH/Richmond Heights) rounds out the Stanford placers as he finished in sixth with a 3-3 record at 174 pounds. Penson tallied two decisions and a fall en route to placing.
Stanford will return to action at the end of the year as the Cardinal travel to Midlands in Evanston, Ill. on Dec. 28th and 29th.
