The Facts
The No. 1-ranked USC women's volleyball team (24-1, 17-1 Pac-10) captured the 2002 Pac-10 Championship last week with 3-0 victories over Arizona and Arizona State in the final conference matches of the 2002 season. This week, the Women of Troy wrap up the regular season with one match at No. 6-ranked UC Santa Barbara (28-1, 18-0 Big West) on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. at the Thunderdome.

Women of Troy Win 2002 Pac-10 Championship!
USC captured sole possession of the 2002 Pac-10 Championship with its sweep of the Arizona schools last week. The is the first-ever outright Pac-10 title for the Women of Troy who shared the 2000 championship with Arizona. USC has now won five conference titles (1976, 1977 and 1980 WCAA champions, 2002 Pac-10 co-champions) in its 26-year program history. With a 17-1 conference record this season, this also marks USC's best-ever performance in the Pac-10.

NCAA Selection Show
The NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee will select the 64-team field, including at least one team from each of the eight districts. A total of 31 conferences have been granted automatic qualification -- by securing the 2002 conference title, USC is the Pac-10 recipient of the automatic bid -- the remaining teams will be selected at large. The selection show will be televised live on ESPN News on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m.

The Rankings
USC remains at No. 1 this week after wrapping up the Pac-10 season. The Trojans reclaimed the top spot on Nov. 18 after then-ranked No. 1 Stanford fell to Washington State. The Women of Troy spent two weeks at No. 2 after holding the top spot for the previous seven week-period (the Women of Troy made their first jump to No. 1 on Sept. 16). USC earned a No. 5 final ranking in 2001 by both USA Today and Volleyball magazine (Volleyball is no longer producing a weekly poll as of Oct. 20) and entered the 2002 season at No. 3.

No Ordinary Nonconference Match
Now that USC has wrapped up the Pac-10 championship, it may seem like the tough part is over before the start of NCAAs... WRONG! The Women of Troy have one match left against sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara, a team that has also only dropped one match this season, also claimed its first-ever outright conference championship and is looking for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. For a season finale, this will be no ordinary match.

Keep Your Eye On...
With the postseason right around the corner, keep an eye on USC's three All-American candidates April Ross, Katie Olsovsky and Emily Adams!

Senior Salute
Friday's match marked the final regular season match for USC's three seniors - opposite hitter Lauren Killian, setter Tracy Lindquist and defensive specialist Julie Mariani. First recruited under former head coach Lisa Love, these three seniors have so far led the Women of Troy to three NCAA appearances, including the 2000 NCAA Final Four, and two Pac-10 Championships (2000, 2002). Lindquist has started and shared setting duties in every match since her freshman year and will likely finish her career at USC with nearly 2,700 assists, placing her among the Trojans' top five all time setters. Killian, the team's captain, is currently averaging a .300 career attack percentage - a mark that would put her among USC's career top 10. And as a freshman Mariani averaged a USC single-season record 0.47 service aces per game. She also finished the season with 50 total aces - a mark that ranks third among the Trojans' all-time season records.

Sharing The Spotlight
The Women of Troy are once again the epitome of a 'Team' effort. It is hard to distinguish the best players on the squad, with three players averaging more than 3.15 kills per game, two players splitting the setting duties, three players averaging more than 3.0 digs per outing and both starting middle blockers tallying more than 1.23 blocks per game.

USC Holding On To Best Record In 25 Years
With a 24-1 record USC is still holding on to its best record in 25 years. In 1977 the Women of Troy captured the AIAW National Championship and finished the season with a 38-0 record - the first undefeated record ever logged by a women's volleyball team in NCAA or AIAW history. Since then, USC's next-best mark came in 2000 when the Trojans went 29-3.

UCSB Connections
The Gauchos have a number of Southern California players on their roster. Defensive Specialist Kristin Nelson is a former prep teammate of USC's Kristen Anderson at Manhattan Beach Mira Costs High. UCSB senior outside hitter Courtney Guerra is a former Pac-10 player. She spent her freshman season (1999) at Cal and appeared in every match.

Match Recaps
vs. Arizona
- USC clinched the 2002 Pac-10 Championship with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-22, 30-26) victory over 16th-ranked Arizona on Sept. 21. Emily Adams led the Trojans with 15 points in the match thanks to a career high nine blocks to go along with five kills. After a slow start in game one, the Women of Troy broke an 11-11 tie with a 5-2 run to go ahead 17-12. At that point, the Trojans completely shut down the Wildcats' efforts by scoring 11 unanswered points en route to the 30-17 win. Trailing by as much as five points (15-10) in game two, Arizona fought to within one at 18-17 and 23-22. But the Wildcats came no closer and were held scoreless for the remainder of the game as USC rolled to the 30-22 win. Arizona matched the Women of Troy point-for-point at the start of game three, and even took its first three-point lead at 13-10. The Trojans knotted the score at 14, 15 and 16, and then again at 21. At that point, thanks to three consecutive hitting errors by the Wildcats and two Trojan kills, the Women of Troy managed to separate themselves by five points (27-22) and eventually took the final game, 30-26.

vs. Arizona State - Emily Adams collected a career high 19 kills and tallied a .581 attack percentage to lead USC to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-15, 30-15) victory over Arizona State on Nov. 22. The Trojans had little difficulty in the contest and took the opportunity to use the entire bench in the three-game victory. Aside from Adams, who led in kills and blocks (4), and April Ross, who contributed 12 kills, nine digs and a .500 hitting percentage, the Women of Troy had seven players log a .333 or better attack effort. Arizona State started the match trailing by only a point at 7-6, but that was as close as the Sun Devils would come for the remainder of the night. Each team collected 16 kills in game one, but USC capitalized on ASU errors to secure a 30-24 opening game victory. In the final two games combined, ASU only managed to post 16 kills and could not defend against the Trojan offense. USC hit .447 and .576 in games two and three, respectively, and made only four combined errors. The Women of Troy won the last two games by identical 30-15 scores.

Black Unis Make Three Appearances
The Women of Troy improved to 3-0 while wearing their black uniforms this season after defeating the Bruins, 3-0, on Nov. 15. The Trojans, who have always worn cardinal uniforms on the road and white at home, decided to sport the new unis this season for selected matches including Arizona (Sept. 21), Stanford (Oct. 4) and UCLA (Nov. 15).

Debbie Green To Be Inducted To USC Hall of Fame
Debbie Green, regarded as America's greatest women's volleyball setter, is among 24 Trojan luminaries that have been selected to the sixth class of USC's Athletic Hall of Fame and they will be honored at a gala black tie induction dinner on May 3, 2003, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Green was a two-time All-American (1976-77) and led the Women of Troy to AIAW national championships both of those years (the 1977 team recorded the first-ever undefeated season in collegiate women's volleyball, 38-0). A two-year letterwinner (1976-77), she was named to two U.S. Olympic teams (1980 and 1984), helping the American women win a silver medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1995, the United States Volleyball Association Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. A product of Westminster High, she has been an assistant coach with the Long Beach State women's team since 1986.

Opponents Have Difficulty Measuring Up To Adams
At 6-foot-5, sophomore middle blocker Emily Adams is hard to match on the other side of the net. She leads the team - and ranks second in the Pac-10 and third in the nation - with a .418 attack percentage. On the block, she leads the team and ranks third in the conference with a 1.29 blocks per game average.

Burdine and Ross Provide 1-2 Punch
Junior outside hitter April Ross is never alone out on the floor. If it's not Ross getting every dig, outside attack and kill, it's sophomore outside hitter Keao Burdine. On a team that has six attackers who can get their share of kills against any opponent, Ross and Burdine are the Women of Troy's 1-2 punch. Together they account for 6.93 kills, 6.03 digs, 0.59 service aces, 1.03 blocks and 8.01 points per game. The two have tallied 672.5 of USC's 1,862 total points this season.

USC Second In NCAA Assists Thanks To Setting Duo
As of Nov. 18, the Trojans rank second in the nation in team assists with a 16.60 assist per game average (0.04 behind first-place Hawai'i and 1.38 ahead of second-place UCLA). Ironically, the Women of Troy don't have a setter ranked in the Top 25 nationally or even among the Top 5 in the Pac-10. This is because USC uses two setters. Running a 6-2 offense, USC boasts the talent of both Toni Anderson and Tracy Lindquist and, while they sacrifice individual accolades, together they lead the nation's No. 1 team. Anderson and Lindquist average 8.56 and 6.44 assists per game, respectively.

Trojans Welcome First International Recruit in 7 Years
Bibiana Candelas is the Trojans' first international recruit since Jasmina Marinkovic was recruited in 1995 from Uzice, Serbia, by former USC head coach Lisa Love. (Marinkovic went on to become a two-time All-American with the Women of Troy before graduating in May, 1999.) Candelas, a 6-foot-5 middle blocker from Torren, Mexico, missed the first two weeks of the season while competing with the Mexican National Team at the World Championships in Dresden, Germany. She arrived on campus on Sept. 9 and began practicing with the team, but did not start competing with the team until she received full clearance from the NCAA on Oct. 24.

Outstanding Crowd witnessed Outstanding Match-up
Nearly 2,200 fans (2,115 to be exact) witnessed an outstanding match-up against the Trojans and Stanford Cardinal on Saturday (Nov. 2) at the Lyon Center. It was the largest crowd to ever watch a USC volleyball match played at the Lyon Center thanks to an additional 500 seats that were added for the match and a standing-room only group of 300-plus.
