Beavers Ground Pilots In Final Match Of The Season

PORTLAND, Ore - The Oregon State women's volleyball team downed the Portland Pilots in four games Tuesday at the Chiles Center in Portland. Senior Megan McMillan hit .405 on the night and had a match-high 20 kills along with 13 digs to lead the Beavers to a 30-25, 30-21, 26-30, 30-26 win overthe Pilots.
'Megan had a great night, it was a nice way for her to end her career,' OSU head coach Nancy Somera said. 'Portland did a nice job defensively in games three and four, but we fought our way through it and found a way to win.'
The Beavers went into Tuesday's match having dropped eight of their last nine matches, but were able to outscore the Pilots with four players having 11 or more kills. Freshman Karah Rhoades and senior Michele Solomon each had 14, and Allison Lawrence chipped in with 11.Laura Collins had team highs with 58 assists and 15 digs. Lawrence and McMillan also reached double figures in digs with 12 and 13, respectively.
The match marked the final collegiate contest for seniors, Tami Halleck, Solomon, McMillan, Joscelyn Hannaford, Nikki Neuburger, and Katrina Nelson. Nelson and Hannaford were forced to sit out the match with injuries.
'I want to say thank you to the seniors who have given their hearts to the program the last four and five years,' Somera said. 'These seniors kept pushing and working hard in the gym even when they knew their playoff hopes were out of reach. I am very thankful for their loyalty to the program and am going to miss them a lot.'
The Beavers finished the year 8-20 overall and 2-16 in Pac-10 play after getting off to a 5-0 start this season.
'We are a better team than a month ago, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us before the 2003 season,' Somera said.
