Volleyball Defeats Southwest Missouri State, 3-0

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Washington used a balanced attack, led by senior outside hitter Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) to overpower Southwest Missouri State, 3-0, this evening in the opening night of the 24th Annual Community Bankers Classic. Game scores were 30-20, 30-23, 32-30.
The Huskies had three player score in double-figures, including Benjamin with 16 and Kara Bjorklund (Olympia, Wash.) and Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) with 10 each. Washington out hit the Bears, .298 to .116.
Freshman libero Candace Lee (Eugene, Ore.) led the Washington defense with 19 digs, followed by Benjamin with 12 and Tomasevic with 11. Bjorklund and senior setter Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) each tallied four blocks on the night.
The win improves Washington's record to 18-10 and advances the Huskies to the tournament championship tomorrow night against host Pacific who defeated Nevada, 3-1, this evening. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
