Women's Volleyball Earns Top Seed For 2002 NCAA Tournament
Dec. 1, 2002
LOS ANGELES - The top-seeded USC women's volleyball team (25-1) will host the first and second rounds of the 2002 NCAA Tournament this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, at the Lyon Center. The No. 1-ranked Women of Troy will face San Diego (25-7) in the opening round on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Trojans, who captured the 2002 Pacific-10 Conference title with a 17-1 record, earned the No. 1 seed in the West Region for only the second time in program history (first was in 2000 when USC advanced to the Final Four).
The winner of the USC-San Diego match will face the winner of Friday's 5 p.m. Utah (25-8) versus Texas A&M (20-9) match in second round action on Saturday at 7 p.m.
USC is making its 20th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament on the heels of having reached the Elite Eight last season and the Final Four in 2000. The Women of Troy have won four national championships (1976, 1977, 1980 and 1981).
'I think our bracket is going to be strong and highly competitive, and I'm excited that we've been given the opportunity to host the opening rounds,' said second-year USC head coach Mick Haley. 'It seems like all of the first round match-ups in the West Region will be outstanding. I think fans will have the chance to witness great competition at these matches.'
The Women of Troy are led by four 2002 All-Pac-10 first team selections, including junior outside hitter April Ross (3.70 kpg, 3.07 dpg), junior middle blocker Katie Olsovsky (2.63 kpg, 1.23 bpg), sophomore outside hitter Keao Burdine (3.23 kpg, 3.00 dpg) and sophomore middle blocker Emily Adams (3.13 kpg, 1.30 bpg). Ross and Olsovsky are returning All-American selections (Ross in 2000, Olsovsky in 2001).
