Terrell Suggs Named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year
Dec. 2, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - Terrell Suggs, a junior defensive end for the Arizona State football team, was named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, the conference office announced Monday. Suggs also was selected to the All-Pac-10 First Team Defense while Shaun McDonald garnered All-Pac-10 First Team Offense as a wide receiver. Tim Parker, among the conference's leaders in punting all year, was selected to the All-Pac-10 Second Team Specialists.
Joining the trio of honorees were seven other Sun Devils, all members of the Honorable Mention team. They are offensive guard Drew Hodgdon, cornerback R.J. Oliver, tight end Mike Pinkard, free safety Jason Shivers, safety Riccardo Stewart, defensive end Jimmy Verdon and linebacker Mason Unck.
Quarterbacks Jason Gesser of Washington State and Carson Palmer of USC earned Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors while USC wide receiver Mike Williams was named as the Freshman of the Year. Cal head coach Jeff Tefford was selected by the conference's coaches as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year.
Suggs has had a sensational season that has seen him lead the nation and set Pac-10 and NCAA single-season records for quarterback sacks. The two-time All-Pac-10 selection established NCAA and Pac-10 records with 22 sacks and his career total of 42 also is an ASU career record. Suggs also leads the Pac-10 and the nation in tackles for loss with 29.5, which establishes a new Pac-10 season record. With Suggs as the leader, the ASU defense led the Pac-10 in QB sacks with 49. He is a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award, the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy this season.
Suggs joins Adam Archuleta (2000), Pat Tillman (1997) and Jake Plummer (1996) as the only Sun Devils to earn a player of the year honor from the conference. Plummer was selected as the offensive player of the year as a quarterback, while Archuleta and Tillman, both linebackers, garnered the defensive award. Suggs also earned the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year award in 2000.
Suggs is a three-time first team selection while McDonald garnered his second first team accolade in as many years. Parker earned his first award at ASU. The seven Honorable Mention members from the Sun Devil team are making their first appearances on the all-conference team.
