Cal Signs Top Prep Athlete
Dec. 3, 2002
The University of California's track and field program has signed Whitney Russell to a National Letter of Intent, announced today by Golden Bear head coach Chris Huffins.
Russell, from Newhall, Calif., attends Hart High School. A distance runner, Russell has times of 5:00.01 in the 1600m and 4:48.65 in the 1500m. She is expected to compete in distance events and should also aid Cal's cross country team.
'Whitney is truly a diamond in the rough,' assistant coach Tony Sandoval said. 'She has a tremendous upside and should fit in well in the middle-distance events and perhaps the steeplechase down the road. She will also help our cross country team, and I believe that she will become a significant competitor in college.'
Russell comes from a family of Bears as her parents, Rick and Dorothy Russell, are Cal graduates.
