Georgia Grounds Cal In Overtime

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Ezra Williams scored 23 points, including thego-ahead 3-pointer in overtime, as Georgia defeated California 78-73 in theJohn Wooden Classic on Saturday.
The Golden Bears outscored the Bulldogs 12-7 over the final 6ï¿½ minutes ofregulation, but could only manage a tie at 69. Georgia's Rashad Wright missedthe game-winning shot from the right side to force overtime.
Joe Shipp's fastbreak dunk gave Cal its only lead to start overtime. ThenWilliams and Jarvis Hayes scored consecutive baskets to put Georgia ahead74-71. Shipp scored inside for Cal's final basket before Hayes scored threepoints and Wright made one of two free throws for the Bulldogs (3-3).
Amit Tamir led Cal (3-1) with 27 points and 11 rebounds, but he didn't scorein overtime. His 3-point attempt to tie the game at 76 was short with less than30 seconds to go.
No. 15 Missouri played Southern California in the second game of thedoubleheader at Anaheim Arena.
Brian Wethers added 15 points for Cal, which is 1-1 against Georgia.
Shipp, coming off consecutive 30-point games for Cal, was held to 12 pointsagainst a Georgia defense that clamped down on him throughout the game.
Jarvis Hayes added 18 points and his twin brother, Jonas, had 16 points forthe Bulldogs, who fell out of the Top 25 this week. Georgia's losses to Texas,Georgia Tech and Minnesota have all been on the road and were by five points orless.
The Bulldogs shot 60 percent in overtime, when Cal was just two of eightfrom the floor.
Neither team led by more than seven points in the second half.
Wethers scored four straight points and Tamir made five in a row to give Cala 66-62 lead with 4:52 remaining.
But Georgia came right back.
Jarvis Hayes scored seven consecutive points as Georgia regained the lead,69-68, with 27 seconds left. Shipp's fourth foul brought Hayes to the line andhe made both, then hit a jumper with Shipp in his face to give the Bulldogs thelead.
Wethers made one of two free throws to tie the game at 69 with 14 secondsleft. Then the Bears turned the ball over when it went off Tamir's fingers.
The Bulldogs, who shot 51 percent in the first half but settled for a 38-alltie, improved to 3-8 against Pac-10 schools.
Georgia is 1-1 in the Wooden Classic, having lost to Stanford in the 1997doubleheader. The game was a homecoming for Bulldogs coach Jim Harrick, whoheaded east after being fired by UCLA in 1996.
